Thinking about buying a business? Before you fall in love with one. Can you really fund it?! 💵

Most people know the purchase price. Far fewer have added up everything that sits around it. Stock at settlement, legal and accounting, working capital for day one, the lender's own fees. It adds up faster than you would think.

There is a free calculator on my website that does the adding up for you. Put in the deal and any property you own, and it shows how much you would need to borrow and whether your security covers it, both with and without using your property.

It is a guide, not an approval. But it means you walk into the conversation already knowing your position, rather than finding out halfway through.

🌿Here is the bit about growth that nobody puts in the brochure.

You hire the new person, and for a few months you are paying them before they are paying for themselves. You order more stock before you have sold it. You sign the lease before the new site has a single customer.

Growth almost always costs money first. That gap is where good businesses get stretched, and it is completely normal. The trick is knowing how big the gap is before you step into it, and deciding how you will cover it.

Cash, finance, or a slower pace. All three are fine, as long as it is a choice and not a surprise.

If you are planning to grow next year and want to map out that gap properly, book a free growth chat with me. Link in my bio.

I spent years on the bank side of the desk. This is what they're really looking at when your business loan application lands 👇

1️⃣ Can the business pay it back? Profit, not turnover.
2️⃣ What's backing it? The business, the equipment or property you own.
3️⃣ What are you putting in? Your cash and your experience both count.
4️⃣ Does the story stack up? A clear plan makes a real difference.

Get these right before you apply and you'll have far more options.

Which one would trip you up? Tell me below 👇

Five things a buyer checks before they make an offer on your business.

Most owners assume a buyer is looking at profit. They are, but that is only the start. What they really want to know is whether the profit will still be there once you have gone.

Every one of these takes time to get right, which is why the best exits start a year or two before the sign goes up.

Swipe through and have a think about which one you would struggle with today. That is your starting point. If you are thinking about selling in the next few years, even loosely, book a free growth chat and we will work out where to begin. Link in my bio.

Honest question. Over the long weekend, how many times did you check your email?!

If the answer is a lot, you are definitely not alone. But it is worth thinking about, because it is one of the first things a potential buyer looks at.

A business that needs you every single day is really a job with overheads. A business that keeps running when you step away is something someone else will pay for.

And you do not need to be planning to sell for this to matter. The things that make a business easy to sell also make it much nicer to own. Written down processes. A team who can make decisions. Clients who know more people there than just you.

Whenever you do want to step back, the groundwork starts years earlier. If that is on your mind, even vaguely, book a free chat with me. Link in my bio.

A long weekend thought for you 💭
When did you last actually look at your home loan? Not the repayment coming out each month, the loan itself.

A lot of loans were set up years ago, for a different income, a different household, sometimes before the business even existed. Life has moved on. The loan often has not.

It does not mean anything is wrong. It just means it is worth a look. Is the structure still right? Does it still suit how you earn now? Is there anything you would set up differently, knowing what you know today?

If you would like a second set of eyes on it, I am happy to have a chat, no pressure at all. Link in my bio.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Messages like this are the best part of what I do.

Raheel was buying a prime mover and trailer to grow his business, and it was not the simplest one to get over the line. We got there.

The thing I love about equipment and vehicle finance is that it is never really about the truck. It is about the work you can say yes to once it is on the road.

Thank you for trusting me with it, Raheel. If you are looking at a vehicle, machinery or equipment to help the business grow, I am always happy to talk through how to set it up. Link in my bio.

We are three months into the new financial year, so here is a quick check in!

Is the business where you thought it would be by now? If yes, lovely. If not, that is not a failure. It is information. The owners I see doing well are not the ones who got the plan perfect in July. They are the ones who pull it out every quarter, look at what actually happened, and adjust.

Three questions for this week:
🌿What worked better than you expected?
🌿What cost more than you planned?
🌿What is going to need money in the next six months?

If you do not have a plan to check against, my free business plan builder is a good place to start. It takes about an hour, and it costs nothing.

The person who decides on your loan will never meet you. They will not see how hard you work, how well you know your customers, or how good you are at what you do.

They just get a file. And your business plan is the only place in that file where your business speaks for itself. That is why it matters so much, and it is why a plan written in dot points by someone who knows their numbers beats a beautiful one that says nothing.

I built a free tool that walks you through it, section by section, so you are not
staring at a blank page wondering what they want.

Tamara bought a business this year. 🎉

The part of her feedback I'm quietly proud of isn't "helpful" — it's "honest."

Because honest sometimes means telling someone the deal doesn't stack up. Or that the structure they've been sold won't sit well with a lender. Or that yes, a second lender will do it, but here's what it'll cost you in security.

Buying a business is one of the biggest calls an owner makes. You don't need a cheerleader for that. You need someone who'll tell you the bit you don't want to hear, early, while it's still cheap to fix.

Congratulations Tamara. Thrilled for you.
