We keep a MentorBank here at RuralScopeHQ.

A MentorBank is our fancy way of saying we have a listing (think Excel spreadsheet) of people who have shared with us they’d love to be considered as mentors in programs we facilitate.

We enjoy the challenge of approaching people - yep cold texts, calls and emails - when we think someone could be a great mentor.

We currently have two key lists.

List 1 = Individual Mentor - interested in a one on one matching and sessions over a specific timeframe.

List 2 = MentorPanel - a mentor who would like to be included in a facilitated panel session with mentees - usually virtual.

Many of our Mentors are on both lists. We take care of our Mentors and include them in the matching process (as we do our Mentees). We also provide ongoing support throughout a mentoring partnership and program.

A few times a year, we do a shout out across our socials too, and invite people to put their names forward to be added to our MentorBank.

Sooooo, how about it? Mentoring is a great way to further develop your leadership skills as well as share your knowledge, skills and expertise in support of Australian agriculture.

Please DM or reach out anytime if you’d like to join our MentorBank. We’d love to hear from you.

Ohh my goodness - just had to post this reel ……

In May 2024 this incredible group of emerging leaders ran an amazing - sold out / standing room only Beef Connections Luncheon at Beef24 part of the Graeme Acton Beef Connections Mentoring Program.

We had a fabulous speaking from the heart session with public speaking coach Each mentee had been part of BeefTV with and then with quiet confidence they all took to the stage, almost 10 years to the day of Graeme Acton’s passing. We were blessed to have Graeme’s family at the Luncheon.

We were delighted to welcome each of the participant’s mentors and then to have the mentees talk of their program experience, mentoring relationships, field visits and leadership development. This was all amongst being joined by the then Queensland Premier and now MP and other dignitaries from The Australian beef industry.

A special shout out to for being a terrific supporter of the program during his time as Chair of and to the producer of the show. We loved facilitating the program.

And congratulations to our mentoring partnerships for a fabulous year and it’s great to see them continuing to impact the Australian beef industry. And a special thank you to our mentors (linked second here) for their generous offering of time, knowledge and expertise. The program would not exist without you.

We are back to do it all again, facilitating another group of Mentors and Mentees for Beef27 and gee it’s going to be a tall order to top this amazing 2024 event. So, for now let’s enjoy the show, there’s so many faces in this reel you’re likely to know.

I agonised over the title for this Newsy and settled on Mentoring is NOT Magic.

I want to dispel the myth that seems to exist that mentoring creates a perfect match and all you need to do is jump on a call or have a meeting and a chat and somehow your magical relationship will develop and you will gain magical knowledge and skills too.

Nah! Nah! Nah! There’s a lot more to a productive and effective mentoring partnership than this. We love mentoring programs and I’m a mentor too. Through both of these experiences we’ve developed some great resources to support mentors and mentees and uncovered the secret sauce to how to develop effective and outcomes focussed programs. There’s a lot more to it than a have-a-chat.

We’re kicking off the 2027 Graeme Acton Beef Connections Mentoring Program soon. It’s a well regarded program having started back in 2015 when it was designed by the Beef Australia Next Gen Committee and facilitated by Barb Bishop.

It’s a stand alone not a bolt on to something else mentoring program and we think this is part of its strength.

We’ll let you know the 2026/27 Mentoring Partnerships when Beef Australia announces them later in May.

So here’s a Friday leadership learning quiz question…..

And it comes after one on one catch up calls with 3 participants and 2 text / messenger sessions with 2 other participants from the Australian Grain Leader Program.

Where does the most leadership learning / development happen?
(A) Inside a face to face workshop OR
(B) In the one on one sessions in between- some are 5 mins / some are 30 mins

For this program, it’s a combination of of both, but it’s in (B) where the rubber hits the road, people get vulnerable, they have a go at new things - imposters show up - and they push through. Clarity is gained and confidence grows.

It’s also where leadership and life integrate and this sees people challenged to act and supported by others in their small project groups. It’s also where true collaboration happens.

I love it when participants take advantage of real life leadership in real time. And that’s often not inside a learning room.

We’re getting ready for our first Blog Post for May. I love writing these leadership must reads! They’re always about bringing leadership into the everyday for everyone. And yes that includes you 🤣 regardless of where you’re at with your leadership journey.

Looking forward to chatting about the Red Earth Community Leadership Program tonight with

It’s one thing to refresh and facilitate a program to enhance the capacity of a community. And it’s another to be doing it alongside an amazing group of people who are keen to continually develop leadership from individual to community impact.

I have shared before that each time a program is run, the primary network extends to around 100 people. This includes participants, sponsors, volunteers, donors of food, time and expertise, facilitators, action learning set facilitators and of course Board members. I’m sure I’ve missed someone.

Too many to list for sure, but a shout out to the participants of 2026 for making the magic up the mountain happen again, to the great facilitation team Ash and Karen. And to for guiding the team.

As I’ve reviewed our role in the 2026 Program, I can honestly share that I don’t know of another program like this one.

From the outside in, it’s a leadership program. From the inside out it’s a group of people with wisdom and foresight on a mission to create a future for their community of tomorrow today. It takes commitment, time, energy, connection, honesty, conviction, patience, vulnerability and trust.

I’m looking forward to sharing some of my insights tonight and once again being challenged about how to create an even better program in 2027!

We are super grateful to the amazing team that has come together for the 2026/27 Graeme Acton Beef Connections Mentoring Program.

There are 9 mentoring partnerships. 9 established leaders as mentors and 9 emerging leaders taking their place in the Australian beef industry to influence and impact change.

Last week, we onboarded the team and were super pleased to share our support for mentors / mentees with a short online program encompassing the effective mentoring relationship model, the 5 step mentoring model as well as some tips and tools to avoid pitfalls. We’re also trialing an online connection point for mentors this year too. The more effective the mentoring partnerships, the better the outcomes for all - individual, enterprise, community and or industry.

We’re meeting up in Brisbane shortly so we’ll save the announcement of mentoring partnerships til then. Look out for that as well as the 9 emerging leaders - we’ll share about them on our stories later this week.

Over the garden fence today…… it’s all about the Autumn days here in South Gippsland atm.

Really pleased to share that all the firewood (1 ton of it) is now all stacked and ready for Winter. The last couple of wheelbarrow loads did get a little wet as we had a lovely Sunday downpour.

Hope you’re enjoying your weekend and have a great week ahead.

My latest blog post, IMPOSTER BE GONE, was inspired by a recent conversation with a group of emerging leaders in AusAg.

It’s one thing to be able to recognise the imposter (always when you’re trying to step beyond your comfort zone) when they pay a visit and it’s another to be able to do something about it when they do.

So here’s a quick read to support you through both.

According to Dr. Valerie Young, there are five common types of imposter syndrome. These are always found in high achievers. Here’s my take on what they are and even more importantly, what do do when they visit. Awareness is great but going one step further into action can really help.

1. The Perfectionist: You set excessively high goals and focus solely on flaws, feeling that 99/100 is a failure.
ACTION - Appreciate that mistakes are part of learning and that “done” is better than “perfect”.

2. The Superhuman (Super-person): You measure competence by how many roles you can juggle perfectly; if you can’t master everything, you feel inadequate.
ACTION - Redefine competence to mean knowing when to ask for help and focus on quality over quantity of tasks.

3. The Natural Genius: You believe competence equals ease and speed. If you can’t master a skill on the first try, you feel like a fraud.
ACTION - Focus on progress rather than ease, and acknowledge that everyone works to learn new skills.

4. The Soloist: You believe you must achieve success on your own. You see asking for help as a sign of weakness or proof of being a phoney (is this the correct spelling?)
ACTION - Understand that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness, and that team success is always valuable.

5. The Expert: You feel you must know everything about a subject to be deemed competent. You fear being exposed as inexperienced or uninformed.
ACTION - Recognise that nobody can know everything and focus on continuous, rather than instant learning.

So, over to you to reframe the next time you see, hear or feel an imposter in your midst. And remember always YOU ARE ENOUGH. 💚

Rural communities are full of so many wonderful people and businesses. Our community is no different. And we love an end of the week - Friday night out!

Here’s where we went tonight.

is an amazing Italian 🇮🇹 outdoors pizzeria, restaurant, gelateria with an incredible deli, fresh bread and bakes and take home meals as well. Their home made pasta sauce is yum and I don’t think we’ve ever been there where we haven’t ordered a another local business at Tarwin Lower.

And if you make a trip to this part of the world - please be sure to visit right opposite Trulli. It’s a beautiful bookshop and my niece Emma (bookshop owner) knows almost every book that’s ever been written!!

Enjoy your weekend and I hope it includes some time out with those you care about.

Do you need to be a content or technical expert to be an effective leader?

The answer is “no”.

In fact, in our world that is changing pace at unprecedented rates, where ambiguity is frequent and uncertainty calls for calm and guidance; technical knowledge and skills will not be the first things called for.

There is no room for leaders in the future that are technically proficient only.
