Different is good [23 second read]

I love that as a daughter born in an army hospital in Germany, I grew up in Scotland and then Yorkshire, England before emigrating with my husband to Melbourne.

I have travelled extensively and been immersed in so many different cultures. I can now take my Australian born son Maverick to an art gallery in our hometown showing an exhibition of a Yorkshire man, Hockney.

My story makes my understanding, approach, ideas and messaging all different and difference is something I strive to explore.

Click on the link above👆🏻to come along with me on this journey.

As above, so below👇🏻message below with where you’re from and your uniqueness and let’s keep telling our stories. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

WHO the bloody hell are you…? [41 second read]

Maybe not the correct famous Australian quote but I’m genuinely interested in the human story.

Not only do I want to know about your life but I want YOU to tell your story to the world.

Right now it’s never been more important to tell your truth.

Journaling especially on social media is (in my opinion) one of the most important ways to connect with each other.

Telling our stories, allows us to connect with the world and allows us to find our who want to journey along with us.

I’m a straight talking Yorkshire lass who now calls Melbourne home. I was a dancer, artist, actor and storyteller and now I’m a creative mum who is going to rewrite your creative business then spit wipe your cheek before sending you out into the world.

Well…no, not the last bit, but seriously follow me and I’ll see that you put your best foot forward.

Linocuts, woodcuts and paintings of our locality will have you wagging your pointer finger in an “Oh I know where that is” admission. She’s the queen of nostalgic feeling with her documentation of suburbia, that’ll make you love where you live.

I asked artist Billy Nye a series of short questions to provide insight and advice for other art mavericks.

🙋🏼‍♀️I used to do it all the time when I was an actor, auditioning for roles. In fact, at the end of the day when I played back the day in my head I used to groan with embarrassment at all the times I’d said something I regretted. Lord knows what my husband thought I was doing?

I used to spout some right boloney, I thought I had to live up to other people’s expectations, and I was uncertain of how to fit into their boxes and who I had to be in order to move in their circles.

Fast forward fifteen years and with more life experience under my belt, I’ve done A LOT of work to find my truth, hence was born.

I can unearth your truth too.

Be honest, how many times have you felt pulled in a different direction? You know when it’s not truthful to you because that little voice inside is groaning at you at night in your bedroom!

Let’s start by getting clear on your message.

My job then is to give you a creative toolkit so that your truthful internal narrative represents your external work.

I can coach you for your opening night, write up an exhibition description or provide a creative brief or media release to give to other creative professionals such as journalists, photographers or even social influencers which outlines you and your brand so your truth shines through.

If you’re feeling brave, please comment below with an example of when you weren’t being truthful to yourself, creatively. How did it manifest? I’d be interested to know…👇🏻

*Gracefully wipes solitary tear of happiness from cheek* So pleased mammas boy is cultured! It’s been for the win during our travels.

We stumbled upon this piece by Damien Hirst. From the way it’s positioned upon our approach the sculpture just looks like the statue of a woman. Once we were closer and saw the inner workings or the biology of the pregnant woman I remarked “Ah thats a Hirst”

Our conversation then went like this..........💬Mav: “Mummy, look there a baby in her tummy but there’s a blue snake near the baby.” 💬Me: “No darling, that’s the umbilical chord that turns into your belly button.” 💬Mav: “Eugh, THAT’S DISGUSTING.” 💬Me: “Yes I suppose it is a little bit darling, yes.”🤷🏼‍♀️ As a family we do enjoy wandering around sculpture parks and particularly enjoy our local ones and
Shout out your favourite park and the piece that means the most to you...

✈️ Fresh from our jaunt in Europe we’re back in Melbourne and I can confidently report I’m back in business baby, or more appropriately I’m back in business with babies!
👩🏼‍💻👦🏼👶🏼 The break is just what I needed.

Little did I realise that far from having to stress about pressures of travelling with kids I actually ended up seeing the world with fresh new eyes.

It’s been a long time since I looked up to the sky and chuckled at seeing a fire engine shaped cloud or chatted to a stranger and swapped stories, advice and well wishes.

We visited lots of cultural sites and absorbed ALL of the art. We marvelled at the vibrant colours of the Moorish architecture at the Real Alcázar de Sevilla 🏰 and joined in with the vocal warm-ups of actors rehearsing at the open-air Minack theatre in Cornwall🎭

The memories, the beauty and the whole experience helped to de-fog my brain and allowed me to see the path that I’m on.

If you haven’t taken a time out, why not consider a study break, social media hiatus, soul maintenance or just some time where you just have no plans, no deadlines and no worries🧘🏼‍♀️ In the spirit of Jay-Z, how good would it be to say, I’ve got 99 problems but the art ain’t one!

Tell me about the break you needed to get the creative juices flowing again…

I was first introduced to through this page and instantly felt a connection to her work. Her colours, lines and forms are truly beautiful. Her recent move to Whyalla, SA has greatly influenced her art. The interesting combination of desert, the steel works, the sea and industrial structures inspires her to paint bold, expressive interpretations of her new landscape. I caught up with her to ask her professional option on a few questions... 💬What tips and tricks do you have for staying confident when working?
Discouragement is the enemy of confidence. Being an artist takes hard work and it doesn’t always ‘flow.’ Avoid looking at other artists work and their successes, especially on social media. Quite often these are unrealistic depictions and can easily lead to comparison and that is dangerous ground to tread on. We all walk our own journey; not someone else’s. To quote Theodore Roosevelt:- “Comparison is the thief of joy.” 💬What’s your biggest problem you face as an artist?
Making a living from my art; trying to sell work consistently and finding different streams of income. Staying motivated in order to stay creative takes a lot of energy. 💬How do you price your artwork?
At first I sought advice from galleries or spaces where my work was being exhibited. I also researched what other artists were pricing their work at according the materials used and their place in the market. I ended up pricing my work by the square metre. This helps me keep my pricing consistent. 💬How do you feel about exhibition opening night?
Opening nights are exciting! It’s like being rewarded for all the hard work and preparation that you’ve put into a show. Wandering around and seeing people’s reactions is always interesting too. Speeches are not really my thing, but I have a go. I like to thank everyone for attending and offer a brief explanation about my work. 📣You can see the above pictured piece ‘Town of Steel’ which has been shortlisted for the Art Prize at The exhibition runs until 15 July.
Carolyn is then exhibiting at the Kensington, VIC from 2 – 5 August 2018.

One question I get asked most is how do I tie in all my creative endeavours into my one art name? The beauty about being a creative soul is that you’ve probably got your fingers in more than one pie. You potentially are a sculptor that can play the ocarina, crochet a fashionable throw and bake a mean carrot cake, if this is you…hello🙋🏼‍♀️! But, ordinarily this is not if people don’t like your work they aren’t likely to buy it because of your other entrepreneurial endeavours, more like they want to buy works that you’ve skilfully crafted and honed over the years. This means they want to know their hard-earned money is going on a piece that you’ve though about not just quickly made before moving on to something else. After all your customer can buy ‘fast art’ from most high street conglomerates at a fraction of the price.
If you don’t have a common theme that links your artistic avenues…find one, it can be as tenuous as you like but play on that consistent thread. If not; create different brands and manage them separately.
You want to show that you are not a jack of all trades but master of one!
Have you struggled with this or overcame this issue in another way? Would be great to hear from you.💻

Probably one of my favourite things about this book by aside from the title ‘There is a Paintbrush in my Coffee’🖌☕️ (because lets face it we’ve all been absolutely shattered and misplaced something🤳🏼🚽🤦🏼‍♀️) is the fact that her book is written for us the creative!
If you have a creative mind, a creative schedule or just creative aspirations this pick-up-able guide will provide you with insights and solutions into navigating through life as an artist from someone who knows!
With each chapter made up of only two pages, this book should live in your bag, your studio space or even rolled up in your back pocket to be taken out and easily consulted on as and when you need to. 💬 “all creative projects have a U shape to them.
The start being an energy filled high point, like the beginning of a U. The middle being something of a slump, when it is just hard work and where it can be easy to feel negative. Finally, you approach completion and you are back to where you started. Back on top. You have finished what you have set out to do and you are giving yourself a high five.
I have found this to be a helpful analogy and it sums up my creative process perfectly.” - 👇🏻Grab a copy of her book today.💻

Head down to the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery until the 17 September to see ‘Mystery to me’ a new exhibition by Instagram superstar
Presenting large-scale digital prints prints on fabric alongside small-scale collage works, she tackles notions of the female protagonist. With a focus on large painterly gestures which surround and engulf the woman in her psychedelic worlds. Gilligan highlights the mysterious yet powerful nature of femininity within contemporary digital realms. While Gilligan employs a traditional retro aesthetic and colour palette, this exhibition allows her works to be accessibly viewed through the rose-tinted glasses of familiarity and nostalgia.

Whilst at the don’t forget to book your teens into her ‘art, collage, Instagram for teens’ workshop on Saturday 2 September. Participants can bring along old magazines and photos and learn how to do retro collages Gilligan–style. 🍒💋For more info: mprg.mornpen.vic.gov.au
