I thought I should provide a quick update about accessing counselling services through LMC. I am able to provide a range of counselling services which are subsidised under Medicare. With a referral from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician I am able to offer up to 10 counselling appointments per year. Depending on your circumstances, these appointments are either fully subsídised or significantly subsidised by Medicare. I specialise in working with children, adolescents and adults who have expereinced trauma or difficult circumstances. Please feel free to make contact if you would like to know more. I currently have appointment times available on Mondays and Saturdays.

Apologies in advance for the advertising fluff that comes along with this post, but I thought it was too important not to share. Hopefully we can start asking the question of “What happened to you?” rather than labelling children as bad, naughty, attention seeking, disruptive, annoying or weird. It’s great that the impact of childhood trauma is being discussed openly in the mainstream media. Let’s hope this is a conversation that raises awareness and helps the world to start to think and respond in a more compassionate (and helpful) way.

"This story is so important to me and I believe to our culture that if I could dance on the tabletops right now to get people to pay attention to it, I would," Winfrey says

When you are faced with the realities of how a difficult childhood and traumatic experiences can affect children, it can sometimes be hard to remain optimistic and hopeful about their future.

This article shares some good ideas on how to help children develop skills that will help them through life. I particularly like “hard things that aren’t emotional or unexpected help us to practice for those that are.” As with anything, life skills and being able to manage big and out of control feelings takes practice.

What does it take to conquer life’s adversities? Lessons from successful adults who overcame difficult childhoods.

One of the many things I enjoy about the work I do is that I get to travel to different parts of Australia. Over recent weeks I have had the opportunity to work with families and communities in far western NSW. The beauty and peacefulness of the scenery is difficult to describe. It is always a privilege to be invited into the lives, communities and landscape of others.

Despite all of the "happy hype" Christmas can be a difficult time for people. We remember and miss loved ones who are no longer in our lives, we normally spend way too much money and families don't always get along like they do in the ads on TV.

Please stay safe, well and enjoy what blessings Christmas does bring your way. If nothing else, it will be over pretty soon!!

If you do need support over the next few days Lifeline provides 24/7 telephone support every day of the year. Lifeline can be reached on 13 11 14.

Some really beatiful words to let a little (or big) person know that it's OK to cry...

Crying is a healthy and necessary way for kids to express their feelings. By saying ‘stop crying’ we send the message that their feelings are not important, not valid, silly, or annoying.
