Meet Sean: Heritage Consultant at Terra Rosa
Sean is an archaeologist and works closely with Traditional Owners to identify, record, and protect cultural heritage. What Sean loves most about the role is the sense of discovery; no two days are ever the same, and there’s always the possibility of uncovering something remarkable.
"Many people are surprised to learn that archaeology isn’t just about stone tools. It’s about working with a living culture, where cultural knowledge, stories, and connection to Country are just as important as what’s found in the ground." Sean explains.
One project he is particularly proud of is their work excavating the ruins of Peelhurst Cottage alongside members of the public and the City of Rockingham. The project became a shared learning experience, highlighting how people connect with their local heritage and what archaeology means to the wider community.
For Sean, working as part of a collaborative team is what makes the role energising; sharing knowledge, experiences, and learnings from the field is a big part of what makes the work rewarding.
Outside the field, Sean's day often starts with listening to podcasts on the commute to the office. A lifelong interest in history and archaeology, sparked by childhood books and watching Time Team, inspired him to pursue a career in the industry.
Throughout his career, Traditional Owners and Elders he's worked with have had the greatest influence, shaping his approach and how he interprets findings. "Their guidance remains a vital part of working as a heritage consultant," Sean says.
And for those just starting in the field, Sean’s advice is simple: take plenty of photos of the cool sunsets, beautiful landscapes, and any unexpected critters you come across.
