Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should.

When you’re good at your job, it’s easy to become the person who does everything. Sometimes it feels quicker to just do the task yourself.

But if you keep holding onto work that someone else could handle, you leave less time for the work that genuinely needs you.

Good delegation isn’t about dumping unwanted tasks on someone else.

Start by asking:

Does this task actually require me? Look for work that doesn’t need your particular expertise, authority, or experience.

Who is the right person? Consider their skills, capacity, and whether the task could help them develop.

What does success look like? Be clear about the outcome, deadline, and any important boundaries.

Can I give them ownership? Explain what needs to be achieved without dictating every step of how to achieve it.

And remember, delegation still requires accountability. Be available for questions and check progress when appropriate, without taking the task straight back at the first sign of difficulty.

Delegation isn’t about doing less. It’s about making better use of everyone’s time and skills.

One for the students ...

Studying something once isn’t enough to remember it.

You read a chapter.

Highlight the important parts.

Review your notes.

It all feels familiar, so you assume you know it.

Then, a week later, much of it is gone.

That’s where spaced repetition can help.

Instead of studying something intensively once, revisit it several times with increasingly longer gaps between each review.

For example:

Day 1: Learn the material.
Day 2: Test yourself on it.
Day 4: Review it again.
Day 7: Test yourself again.
Day 14: Do another quick review.

Each time you successfully retrieve the information, you strengthen your ability to remember it later. And importantly, don’t just reread your notes. Use flashcards, practice questions, or simply close your notes and try to explain the concept from memory.

Cramming might get information into your head tonight. Spaced repetition helps keep it there.

Study. Space. Recall. Repeat.

Back for year three!

Apparently, walking 142km around Canberra once wasn’t enough for our Director, Alex Brennan. Or twice.

This year, Alex is taking on the Menslink Great Walk for the third time, joining a group of Canberra business and community leaders for five days on the Centenary Trail.

Having completed the walk twice already, Alex has a pretty good idea of what 142km does to your feet. More importantly, he has also developed an even greater appreciation of why this walk, and the work it supports, matters.

Growing up isn't always easy. Young men can face challenges with their mental health, relationships, family, school, work, loneliness, confidence, and simply finding their place in the world. Too often, young guys feel like they need to deal with those challenges on their own.

That's why the work Menslink does is so important.

Through free counselling, volunteer mentoring, and education programs, Menslink gives young men across Canberra somewhere to turn. It gives them someone to talk to, positive role models to learn from, and the skills and confidence to deal with challenges in their lives.

Importantly, it's not just about stepping in when things have gone wrong. It's about helping young men build resilience, make better choices, develop stronger relationships, ask for help when they need it, and grow into the men they want to become.

That impact extends well beyond the individual young man. Stronger, healthier, and more connected young men contribute to stronger families, friendships, workplaces, and communities.

Having supported Alex through his previous two Great Walks, we're proud to see him pulling on the walking shoes and taking on the challenge again in 2026.

The physical challenge is significant: 142km over five days. But the bigger goal is raising funds that allow Menslink to continue providing its services at no cost to young men and their families.

We're asking our colleagues, clients, suppliers, friends, and the wider Canberra community to get behind Alex again this year.

Whether you've supported one of his previous walks or this is your first time, every donation helps Menslink be there for a young guy when he needs someone in his corner.

If you can, please donate and help us support Alex, Menslink, and Canberra's young men.

EMERGENCY EYEWASH, WHERE YOU NEED IT

Not every workplace has easy access to a fixed eyewash station, particularly across workshops, warehouses, construction sites, agricultural settings, and remote locations.

The Aerowash Gravity Fed Eyewash Station provides a portable solution that can be installed or relocated where it’s needed.

With a 30L gravity-fed reservoir, it delivers approximately 15 minutes of continuous flow, while the high-visibility basin and twin spray outlets help users align and flush quickly in an emergency.

Portable eye safety. Anywhere, anytime.

Work expands to fill the time you give it.

Give yourself all day to finish a task, and there’s a good chance it will take all day. Give yourself an hour, and suddenly you find a way to focus.

That’s the idea behind Parkinson’s Law: work tends to expand to fill the time available for its completion.

More time can mean more procrastination, more tweaking, more distractions, and more time spent overthinking decisions that don’t need overthinking.

Try giving routine tasks a realistic but tighter deadline.

Instead of “I’ll finish this today”, try “I’ll have this done by 11:00.”
Instead of allowing an hour for a simple meeting, schedule 30 minutes.
Instead of endlessly polishing a document, decide in advance when it will be finished.

The goal isn’t to rush important work. It’s to stop straightforward work consuming more time than it deserves.

Set a clear finish line.

Focus on what matters.

Get it done, then move on.

Time blocking doesn’t work if you make this mistake.

You’ve planned your day perfectly.

9:00 - emails.
9:30 - meeting.
10:30 - project work.
12:00 - another meeting.

Every minute has a purpose.

Then one meeting runs 15 minutes late. An urgent request lands in your inbox. A task takes longer than expected.

Suddenly, your carefully planned day falls apart.

The problem isn’t time blocking. It’s blocking 100% of your time.

A realistic calendar needs breathing room.

Leave buffers between meetings. Allow extra time for tasks that might run over. Keep some space available for unexpected work. Don’t treat every empty space in your calendar as something that needs filling.

Time blocking should give your day structure, not create a schedule so rigid that one delay ruins everything.

Plan your priorities.

But leave room for real life.

Don’t fill your calendar. Design it.

Stop putting things down to deal with later.

You open the mail and leave it on the bench. You take something out of a cupboard and put it on the table. You read a message, decide you'll respond later, and then have to read it all over again.

Each one seems insignificant.

But every time you leave something to deal with later, you're creating another task for your future self.

Try the One-Touch Rule.

When you pick something up or open something that needs action, deal with it then and there where practical.

Put it away. File it. Bin it. Respond to it. Complete the action.

Of course, not everything can or should be dealt with immediately. But if something takes a minute or two to finish, avoid turning it into a job you'll need to remember later.

Touch it once. Deal with it once. Move on.

A little less clutter. A few fewer decisions. One less thing waiting for you tomorrow.

Think productivity, think Blue Ink.
