Under the bonnet sits a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder pushing 206 kW through an all-wheel-drive system - launching from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. All while comfortably seating five with 605 litres of boot space.

But this one isn’t just any Volkswagen Golf R Wagon. It’s the limited-edition Wolfsburg Edition.

The name traces back to Germany’s Wolfsburg Castle, built around 1300. The surrounding city was purpose-built in 1938 for workers building the original Beetle, before adopting the castle's name after WWII. Today, it serves as VW’s global HQ and the world’s largest car manufacturing plant (with 650 hectares of factory floor space alone).

That heritage sits right on the tailgate in the form of the Wolfsburg crest, featuring a wolf atop a castle tower.

Hiroyuki Koba regularly hits 200 km/h in open-wheel racecars at the Suzuka circuit in Japan - and even drove a race-spec version of this very car in the gruelling Nürburgring 24-Hour endurance race.

In his personal garage? A 4th-gen Supra and a supercharged MR2.

So, when assigned chief engineer for a new compact SUV at Toyota, he knew exactly what he wanted: something completely different from the rest of the brand's largely beige range.

The result? The CH-R (Compact High-Rider), with aggressive diamond-shaped curves, hidden rear door handles, and sharp handling. And why not throw in Hornet Yellow paint as an option?

Toyota Australia even named this top-spec trim the "Koba" in his honour.

A hybrid, and an F-Sport?

Yep, this 2022 Lexus NX up for auction at CARBIDS Canberra can multitask spectacularly well - hitting average fuel consumption of 5L/100 km one moment, and dusting off 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds the next.

It's no BMW M or Mercedes-AMG, but's it at least a warm SUV.
