Jaguar has finally unveiled the production version of its earlier controversial concept, and apart from gaining another pair of doors, the Type-01 looks remarkably similar to that earlier box.

We also know it's fully electric, produces up to 757kW, costs around $300,000 AU and looks like absolutely nothing Jaguar has built before.

But this isn't the first time Jaguar has tried reinventing itself to attract younger buyers.

Back in 2008, the XF replaced the rather elderly S-Type and gave Jaguar a much-needed image overhaul. It borrowed a fair bit from Ford underneath, but took the fight to BMW and Mercedes and convinced younger buyers to give the brand a go.

It was a hit. So much so that Jaguar's global sales eventually reached record highs.

Before things started to go south.

Now Jaguar is trying again, only this time it's doing almost the complete opposite of what worked with the XF.

We've taken a look at how Jaguar's last reinvention happened, why it eventually ran out of steam, and whether this latest $300,000 gamble might work.

There's quite a bit of serious machinery in this week's Sydney General Cars auction.

Leading the line-up is a 2020 BMW X5 M Competition with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, joined by a supercharged Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport, Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE and Jeep Wrangler Overland 4x4.

There's also a broad selection of family SUVs, seven-seaters and everyday cars, including a Ford Everest Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

The sign wasn't wrong.

But in this case, the noise comes courtesy of the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 in this rather striking red 2016 Porsche Macan GTS.

It also gets adjustable suspension, all-wheel drive, red seatbelts and one of the best-looking SUV body shapes around (complete with 20-inch gloss-black wheels).

It feels like there's a new Chinese car brand arriving in Australia every week, usually with a name you've never heard of. Leapmotor is among them, but with an unexpected connection to Maserati.

Yep, one of Australia's cheapest electric SUVs, the Leapmotor B10, has suspension tuned with help from the Italian exotic-car maker. And after spending a week with it, including a 250km trip from Sydney to Canberra, we discovered it's accordingly quite a good thing to drive.

It's spacious, comfortable, generously equipped and surprisingly well sorted on the road. But the technology still has its moments, the claimed range proved optimistic, and there are some questions about what it'll be worth when it's time to sell.

So, is this another cheap Chinese SUV destined to be forgotten, or one that's genuinely worth considering?

Back in the early 2000s, Toyota decided it needed to get down with the kids.

A modern take on the original 1970s FJ40 LandCruiser, the FJ Cruiser was designed to attract buyers who weren't terribly excited by Toyota's increasingly large and same-same 4WDs.

And the original 2003 concept was so well received Toyota barely changed it for production. It arrived in 2006, complete with three windscreen wipers, backwards-opening rear doors and that rather distinctive shape (some did call it ugly).

This 2012 example, with 260,164 km on the clock and a few aftermarket extras, is up for grabs in our Commercial & 4x4 Auction, closing Tuesday, 13 October.
