It’s Small Business Week! 🎉

This week, we’re celebrating the small businesses that play such an important role in our local community and economy.

From our retailers, cafés and professional services to manufacturers, creatives, home-based businesses and everything in between, small businesses contribute to local jobs, investment, innovation and the vibrancy of our community.

Small Business Week 2026 runs from 17–21 August and is a great opportunity to recognise the people behind our small businesses and the contribution they make every day.

We encourage our community to continue supporting local, discovering local businesses and celebrating the people who help make Gawler and surrounds a great place to do business.

📣A media statement from the S41 Gawler Business and Economic Development Committee regarding Tammy's Table.

S41 Gawler Business and Economic Development Committee resolve to terminate funding agreement of Tammy’s Table

At the 10 August Gawler Business and Economic Development Committee's recent meeting, it was resolved unanimously to terminate the funding agreement with Tammy Edwards, convenor of Tammy’s Table. Tammy’s Table is a monthly, locally held networking event where a range of issues are covered related to small business operations. Ms Edwards has run Tammy’s Table for over 5 years, and the Committee acknowledge that there are a core group of local businesses that attend these sessions and have benefitted from the interactions and information sharing.

The Committee supports a wide range of initiatives important to local business in Gawler, funded by a separate rate levied on both commercial and industrial land owners. This brings obligations on how best to spend finite funds to bring value to those businesses. It was determined in July by the Committee when finalising budget priorities, that there was capacity to fund bi-monthly meetings and that a range of other mentoring and other business support services would also assist local businesses grow. Unfortunately, Ms Edwards is unable to run bi-monthly meetings and has declined this arrangement.

Ultimately, the Committee formed the view that it was now best to terminate the arrangement and examine how best to reallocate funds for the wider business community of Gawler. The Committee applauds Ms Edwards for the work she has undertaken, but the lack of a formal tender process and contract prior to awarding funds to Tammy’s Table is no longer a process that the Committee can accept when allocating moneys collected from business under the separate rate.

Chair of the Gawler Business Economic Development Committee Mr Anthony Harnett said
“The Gawler Business and Economic Development Committee is committed to maximising the value of its initiatives in Gawler. Sometimes this requires decisions that see long standing commercial arrangements come to an end, in order to re-focus on new opportunities. On behalf of the Committee, we recognise Tammy Edward’s efforts and wish her the best with her future business ventures. The Committee via Town of Gawler economic development staff will reach out to affected participants to ensure they can access appropriate support and advice"

In addition, there are a range of other support services provided by Council, the Regional Development Authority Barossa Gawler Light Adelaide Regional Development Australia Barossa Gawler Light Adelaide Plains as well as the Small Business Commissioner that should be accessed. Council’s Economic Development Officer will be personally reaching out to affected businesses who attended Tammy’s Table to gauge their needs and how best to further assist including accessing critical information.

Further discussions at the Committee in coming months will further reflect on how best to support affected businesses.
