Biochar has many uses including being used in building and construction. Here’s 10 reasons why it’s great for soils.

There really is an endless list to the benefits of biochar use, but I will limit the benefits to 10 points in this post, just to give you an idea of the potential. #1 Biochar is a long term, fixed form of carbon that persists for many lifetimes.

If you’re interested in biochar but didn’t see The Great Acceleration last night you can catch up here. One of our mentors (and the reason we got into BioChar) Stephen Joseph, talking about and it’s benefits. (starts about 7.30 and goes for 7-8mins)

This remarkable science-history series investigates the blistering pace of human endeavour in space exploration, computing, energy, resources, Earth science and our understanding of the evolution of life itself.

Join us at the UWA Future Farm in Pingelly to see a demonstration of land restoration options using straw, compost and biochar. How can we use organic materials to restore soil function? Get your hands dirty looking at the results and contribute to a ‘How to’ manual that will assist in the use of permeable biomass barriers.

Activated Biochar in Animal Health

SOFT Agriculture Pty Ltd offers a range of certified organic products that improve the health and productivity of animals and the quality of soils.

The key ingredient of their Green Stockfeed range is a specially formulated blend of Activated Biochar for animal ingestion to improve livestock health, aid weight gain and ultimately improve the profitability of an animal farm operation.

Activated biochar is very good at retaining water, toxins, and bacteria. These qualities cause activated biochar to slow digestion and increase gastrointestinal tract surface area, allowing for improved FCR and production.

It also allows toxins and bacteria to be absorbed by the activated biochar and not by the animal's digestive system, leading to improved health and decreased mortalities.

A number of other advantages have been noted from using activated biochar in animal feed, including:
- Reduced ammonia emissions (safer for animals and environment, nitrogen stored as protein, rewards from clean energy regulators)
- Dryer and improved manure quality
- Stored carbon (income from carbon credits)
