🖼️THE COLLECTORS’ CABINET🕰️

Some collections are defined by one category. Others are defined by curiosity.

Henleys Auctions is pleased to present The Collectors’ Cabinet, a timed online auction of 152 lots spanning militaria, Chinese and Asian works of art, decorative arts, Australian pictures, mid-century design and an assortment of unusual objects that rarely fit neatly into a single category.

Highlights include an important First World War Military Cross group awarded to Second Lieutenant Alfred Arthur Hall of the Army Cyclist Corps, Chinese export silver, late Qing and Meiji period works, Australian art by Harald Vike, Pro Hart and Margaret C Francis, mid-century furniture, antique scientific instruments, early colonial ephemera and an intriguing selection of collectables.

Among the curiosities are a 1977 Penfolds Grange, a circa 1978 Canon underwater camera housing, stereoscopic Boer War and First World War images, Qantas and international airline playing cards, signed entertainment memorabilia and a 1977 Toltoys Star Wars board game.

Who remembers Jet Black – Racing Driver? 🏁

Here’s a piece of Australian motoring history that we have become rather fond of at Henleys.

Jet Black – Racing Driver was an Australian comic series from the late 1950s, created by talented writer and illustrator Terry Trowell, who was also Art Director of Modern Motor.

Jet Black was a former fighter pilot turned racing driver for the fictional Cougar Racing Team, travelling the racing circuit with his manager George Faversham and girlfriend Rusty Redd. Naturally, motor racing was rarely straightforward, there were villains, international intrigue, beautiful cars and plenty of action along the way.

What makes these particularly interesting to us is the connection with the real motoring world of the period. The comics incorporated contemporary racing drivers and cars, motorsport photography and even illustrated racing circuits and games.

And the artwork, particularly those painted covers, is fantastic.

We recently came across a collection of Jet Black comics and couldn’t resist adding them to the Henleys collection for the time being.

But we’re curious…

The Qantas A380 master branding maquette has found a new owner. Consigned by Captain Richard de Crespigny AM and depicting VH-OQA, the very aircraft he commanded on QF32, it closed on Tuesday in the middle of its estimate after a fortnight that took in coverage in the Australian Financial Review and Australian Flying and a great deal of interest from right across the aviation community.

Our thanks to Captain de Crespigny for entrusting the piece to us and for the care he put into its story, and to Hans Hulsbosch, whose agency shaped the Qantas identity the maquette carries, for authenticating it.

A remarkable object, a remarkable pair of custodians, and a fitting result.
