After a season of conversations with clinicians, entrepreneurs, educators, researchers, and innovators, I found myself reflecting on a simple question:

What does the future belong to?

For years, many of us were taught that success in healthcare came from becoming more qualified.

More courses.
More certifications.
More experience.
More expertise.

And while those things absolutely matter, I'm no longer convinced they're enough on their own.

What I noticed throughout Season 5 of The Entrepreneurial Clinician was that the people creating meaningful, sustainable, and often unconventional careers weren't necessarily the most qualified.

They were the people who:
✔ Protected their capacity
✔ Stayed curious
✔ Learned skills beyond their clinical expertise
✔ Valued lived experience
✔ Remained open to opportunities they couldn't see when they first graduated

Healthcare is changing.
Work is changing.
Technology is changing.

The question isn't whether change is happening.
It's already here.

The question is whether we're willing to change with it.
The final episode of Season 5 is now live, and I'd love for you to listen.
🎙️ What do you think health professionals need to pay more attention to over the next 5–10 years?

As health professionals, we're taught to look after our tools.
We calibrate equipment.
We maintain systems.
We replace things when they're no longer fit for purpose.

But what about the tool we rely on more than any other?
Our brain.
Every clinical decision.
Every difficult conversation.
Every assessment.
Every report.
Every moment of critical thinking.
Every act of empathy.
It all depends on our brain.

Yet many of us have spent years treating our brain as if it has unlimited capacity.
Push through.
Work harder.
Stay later.
Carry more.
Think faster.
Remember everything.

No wonder so many clinicians feel exhausted.

This week's episode of The Entrepreneurial Clinician with Nic Lucas challenged me to think differently about the brain—not as something we simply use, but as something we need to understand, protect, and optimise.

Because mindset, determination, and resilience are important.
But they aren't the whole story.

If your brain is one of the primary tools of your trade, how much attention are you giving to keeping it in good working order?

I used to think the answer to my exhaustion was creating something that would eventually become “set and forget.”

A course.
A digital product.
An online income stream.
Something that would finally make life feel easier.

And honestly?
I think I got that wrong for a long time.
Not because online income is a bad idea.

I actually think many clinicians need more flexibility, diversified income and less dependence on systems that keep changing around us.

But because I misunderstood what sustainable e-commerce actually requires.

I thought:
“If nobody is buying it anymore, maybe nobody wants it.”
Instead, what I’m learning is:
people may still absolutely want the help…
they just want it delivered differently.
Buyer behaviour changes.
Attention changes.
People are more overwhelmed now.

Big complicated offers can feel exhausting before someone even clicks purchase.
This week on The Entrepreneurial Clinician, psychologist Mealisa McCaffrey from QQA Prepand I had such an honest conversation about:

adapting offers
reviewing what’s actually working
changing buyer behaviour after COVID

and why “set and forget” is rarely the answer in business
What struck me most was realising that my desire for simplicity wasn’t laziness.

It was a nervous system trying to find safety.
And I suspect a lot of clinicians are quietly trying to solve that same problem right now.

Why Smart Clinicians Make Selling Harder Than It Needs To Be
And honestly… this conversation challenged me A LOT.

Not because it was about “marketing.”
Because it was about communication.

As health professionals we are trained to:
educate
explain
analyse
justify
and provide more information.

So when something online is not working, we often think:
“I need to explain it better.”

Meanwhile the person visiting our website is often:
tired
stressed
overwhelmed
confused
and trying to decide whether they trust us enough to take the next step.

This interview with Matthew Stafford was FULL of practical gold.

At around the 7-minute mark he shares ONE question to ask buyers that can completely change how you understand your website and products.

At around the 15-minute mark he explains the easiest way to know whether your homepage is actually working.

I spent a good portion of this interview internally side-eyeing my own websites 😅

If you are:
a private practice owner
trying to create a course
selling digital resources
building alternative income streams
or simply trying to make your services easier for people to understand
…please listen to this episode.
And maybe bring a notebook.
Because confused people don’t buy.

And clinicians?

We are VERY good at accidentally confusing people.

I think one of the biggest mistakes we make in healthcare is assuming the appointment itself IS the intervention.

It’s not.
What happens between sessions matters just as much… sometimes more.

Because that’s where:
life happens
overwhelm happens
fatigue happens
forgotten homework sheets happen
capacity disappears
and real humans try to fit therapy into already full lives

This week on The Entrepreneurial Clinician I spoke with occupational therapist and Theratrak
founder Laura Simmons about what happens when clinicians stop asking:

“Why aren’t people compliant?”
…and start asking:
“How do we build systems that better support people in real life?”
Such a good conversation.
Also apparently OTs may secretly be excellent UX designers and honestly… that tracks 😂

A little note from me.

There won’t be a new episode for at least the next two Tuesdays, possibly three.

Not because anything is “wrong”
but because I need to take care of me.

Right now, rest is wise.
And giving my brain and nervous system some space is part of that.

Thanks for being here.

There is a whole library of conversations already there for you.

This may be a lovely time to catch up, re-listen, and take in something from an earlier episode that lands differently now.

This week on the podcast, I’m talking about how overseas-trained health professionals can work in Australia.

It’s a bit more technical than usual, so this one won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

But for the right person, it could be incredibly useful.

We cover migration pathways, skills assessments, English requirements, registration, and the cultural adaptation that often matters just as much as the paperwork.

If you know someone who is trying to work this out, check the links in the comments.

Go be your awesome self.

Have you ever wondered whether your clinical qualifications could take you to another country?

That’s exactly what my guest, Dr Julia A. Andre, CPsych AFBPsS, has done.

In this interview, she openly shares what it took — the paperwork, credentialling, and visas — and how a girl from Germany ended up running a trauma and addiction clinic in Bali.

It’s a fascinating conversation that will challenge how you think about what is possible for us as clinicians in a global community.

See the comments for the link to the full interview.

I think many of you iwill really enjoy this week’s episode of The Entrepreneurial Clinician with Dr Julia Andre.

Julia studied in Germany, then Holland, navigated her way into Hong Kong, worked through British credentialling, and now lives and works in Bali as part of a residential trauma and addiction centre.

It’s a fascinating conversation for any health professional who has ever wondered what might be possible with their qualifications, especially if you’ve ever dreamed about working overseas but felt put off by the paperwork, registrations, visas, and general complexity.

We also talk about trauma recovery, intensive care models, and why clinicians need support around their own emotional responses to client work.

It’s a rich conversation and Julia really does embody the spirit of an entrepreneurial clinician.

Question for you:
Have you ever thought about working in another country or creating a less conventional career path with your qualifications?

31/03/2026

You might not be burnt out.
You might have just outgrown it.

Your role.
Your business.
The version of you that built it.

We’re very good at telling ourselves:
“I should be grateful”
“I should be able to handle this”
“I just need a break”

But what if…
you don’t need to push through
or pull back…
👉 you need to realign
