The images below are from an Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS) serviced by another service provider in January of this year, which was given a glowing report. The client had some reservations, and I was asked to inspect. I found several issues: the water levels in the treatment chamber were lower than usual due to degradation of the sealant between the baffles, the air blower needed to be in a better state, and the air filter was never cleaned, let alone replaced as recommended. The semi-treated effluent was discharged through one dome sprinkler (recommended 3-4) at the base of an Eucalyptus and not into a designated Land Application Area (LAA). There were other issues; however, the septic chamber was also inferior. I removed around 20kg of dreaded cleaning wipes. Remember the 5Ps P*e, Poo, Paper, Puke & Peter for a happy, healthy system

Today, I was asked to inspect a new twin concrete tank AWTS installation, as the smells were unbearable (The AWTS brand name withheld). The owner indicated that the system had recently been commissioned. Several issues: the valves inside the treatment tank were not appropriately set. The adjustment of other components was ignored, and the air diffusion was inadequate - the air blower installed had a rating of 80 litres/min, whereas a system this size should have a rating of 120 litres/min. The builder had no understanding of an AWTS nor the council requirements. The owner has to approach the builder to have the air blower upgraded.

The image below shows the inner workings of the UltraClear Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS)
Aerobic Treatment
The aerobic treatment consists of two chambers with a media pack fixed below the water level. Oxygen is supplied to the liquid through diffusers to produce an aerobic state. Microbes quickly form and attach to the media pack. These microbes, called aerobes, clean the water as it passes through.
Disinfection
Although clear, the clarified water will contain some pathogens which need to be removed. Water flows through a regulated chlorination device to the retention chamber, removing final bacteria before flowing into the pump chamber.
Surge Control
There is an allowance for water to rise and fall throughout the entire system by up to 250 litres, to reduce water surging through the aeration/settling chambers, allowing complete treatment of effluent.
Settling Chamber
Suspended solids are allowed to settle under still conditions. Settled particles (referred to as sludge) return automatically to the primary chamber inlet, by venturi device, which is set by the service technician.
Sludge Return
The settling sludge in the sedimentation chamber is returned to the primary inlet of the septic chamber. Effluent Disposal
Treated effluent is automatically pumped onto gardens and lawns. The disposal area is to comply with local Council requirements.
Operation
When all drainage and electrical supply is connected to the unit by licensed contractors, the system is commissioned by our service technician — 7 days' notice is usually required. Landscaping must be completed by the owner to comply with local council requirements. The system operates automatically. It does not need any additives to produce an anaerobic or aerobic state. Any adjustments to the system should be carried out by authorised technicians.
General
Power consumption to run a system is similar to an average household refrigerator.

Why the need for 'Approval to Operate' In 1997, an incident occurred where wastewater was found to be discharged into Wallis Lake, near Port Macquarie. The discharge came from several domestic septic tanks. As the Lake was used for aquaculture, an outbreak of Hepatitis A occurred, resulting in 444 people contracting the disease and one fatality. As a result, a review was undertaken, and it found that councils were best placed to inspect and regulate the use of on-site sewage management systems. Changes were made to the Local Government Act 1993 to require everyone with on-site sewage management systems to obtain the 'Approval to Operate' the system. The maximum time that approval can be granted is five years, and the approval is not transferable on selling a property.
