This year has been a rather interesting one for the team at All Guard, and the termites have been keeping as rather busy. This is a property which we had completed a Pre Purchase Pest & Building Inspection and it was full of surprises.

The team at All Guard have had a rather busy week this week. With the weather finally clearing up it has given our team chance to install another above ground baiting program.

With visible workings on the timber framing, our technicians can effectively monitor both the bait stations and any potential pest activity in the surrounding areas.

During our inspections we come across a lot of trees on properties. We often suggest that trees, especially mature, be drill tested and flooded.

What this means is, we drill small holes into the trunk of the tree and test them to see if any termite activity is within. If termite activity is present we then treat the termites and the potential nest within.

What can be seen in this video is the devastating effect that termites can have on trees. The roots and internals of the trunk have been eaten, all whilst still looking healthy.

The most frequent question we get asked once a Pre Purchase Pest Inspection has been complete is, “What does, slab edge inspection zone does not comply and needs to be exposed, mean”

Here is a video with a perfect example. What you can initially see is a colour bond shed with heavy debris and soil abutting, hiding the concrete slab edge. This has created a concealed area where termites are able to gain entry to the internal timber framing undetected.

As we pan around to the rear of the shed, a visual inspection zone of the the concrete slab edge can be seen. This exposed edge gives the technician an area/inspection zone, where any termite activity can be visibly seen.

Although an exposed slab edge is not always achievable, in areas where it is possible, it is highly recommended. Thankfully this had been caught with some keen eyes and a treatment was able to be completed with minimal damage to the internal timber framing.

Unfortunately we get asked this particular question a lot. My house/granny flat/shed is steel frame, do I need termite inspections?

Well the answer is yes, unfortunately a lot of the internal fit outs consist of timber. Yes the shed walls are fine, but as seen in this video the kitchenette and partition walls have all been affected.

With the weather starting to warm up, we are progressively seeing more termite activity. Here we have a progress video of a service check on an active baiting program.

We have 3 stations set up in the kitchen and storeroom of this property, with feeding now concentrated to this one station. A significant colour change is present amongst the termites, telling us they have been consuming and spreading the baits within the colony. What we can also see is less and less worker termites each visit, both these signs pointing to a positive result towards colony eradication.

We always recommend yearly inspections to your property’s, to help prevent termites before it’s too late.
