The UK’s first completely bridleless horse competition got me thinking.

What becomes possible when we remove unnecessary restraints?

Horses thrived without control, responding with trust and connection.

Humans are the same, we’re living systems, not machines.

Purpose sits at the centre, not hierarchy, not processes.

Great leaders remove barriers, enable strengths and trust people to contribute.

The lesson is clear: conditions enable, purpose guides, people drive results.

Attending the second National Healing and Striving Together Conference was a powerful reminder that behind every statistic is a human story of courage, resilience, and rebuilding.

This work matters.

Through NeuCoach, I’m committed to being part of the solution. Every time a corporate books a leadership development experience with me, I give back by supporting individuals and families impacted by domestic and family violence.

Because leadership isn’t just what happens in boardrooms.
It’s how we show up for our communities.

We have been searching for certainty in a world that no longer responds to it.

The newest McKinsey State of Organizations report confirms it!
We are not in incremental change
We are in structural shift.

Three tectonic forces are reshaping organisations:
Technology, especially AI
Economic and geopolitical disruption
Workforce transformation

Together, they are redefining how organisations must operate.
Yet many are still responding the same way. More structure, more control, more direction at exactly the moment the human system is shifting.

Neuroscience research, including David Rock’s work, shows certainty is no longer the dominant trigger
What is rising instead?
Connection, fairness, meaning, contribution.

The McKinsey data reinforces the gap between organisations that are fatigued and those that are energised.

Reflective leaders are far more confident in their ability to adapt, yet reflection and self awareness are still not designed into most leadership systems... we are leaving the most critical capability to chance.

At the same time, intrinsic motivation continues to be underestimated despite being a key driver of sustained performance. This is where the shift becomes unavoidable.

Human centric leadership is not a cultural initiative.
It is operational infrastructure.

It enables decision velocity
It unlocks collective intelligence
It allows organisations to adapt in real time
Without it, leadership becomes the bottleneck

We are moving from hierarchy to mission based leadership.

From control to conditions
From having answers to enabling intelligence
Transformation works when people are taken forward, not replaced.

This is what the next era requires: Better conditions for humans to think, contribute and adapt together as a living system.

The organisations that understand this will define what comes next.

Now this is one way to develop an eco Mindset! Moving from ego to eco is a shift i work on with participants we stand and view the paddock environment from a lookout point noticing things you normally cant when you are in the paddock. This is the shift leaders need to lead collectively and think strategically.

“I went to space and discovered an enormous lie.”

Former astronaut Ron Garan reveals the "enormous lie" of global division after witnessing Earth's fragile biosphere from the International Space Station.

Ron Garan spent nearly six months orbiting the Earth, a journey that permanently altered his understanding of our world. From the International Space Station, he experienced the "Overview Effect," a profound cognitive shift where political borders and social divisions completely vanish. Looking down at the planet from 250 miles up, Garan was struck by the shocking thinness of the atmosphere—a delicate blanket of gases that serves as the only shield against the lethal vacuum of space. This vantage point replaced the concept of separate nations with the reality of a single, fragile orb suspended in the darkness of the cosmos.

This perspective led Garan to conclude that many of humanity’s greatest challenges, from climate change to biodiversity loss, are actually symptoms of a "lie" we tell ourselves: that we are separate from the environment. Instead of seeing competing economies or political factions, he saw a unified, interconnected biosphere supporting nearly every living thing. He argues that our survival depends on shifting our collective mindset to match this orbital reality, treating the planet not as a resource to be divided, but as a rare and finite life-support system that requires urgent, global stewardship.

Would a horse follow you?
Not your title.
Not your authority.
You.

Most leadership development happens in boardrooms.
Slides, frameworks, strategy discussions.

But leadership presence is not built in PowerPoint.
It lives in the nervous system.

Recently I joined Kylie Denton, Arthur Kallos and Bram Lagrou on the Beyond Business podcast to explore one of leadership’s most unexpected teachers.

The horse.

Horses are incredibly sensitive to the emotional and physiological signals of the person standing beside them. As prey animals their nervous systems are constantly scanning for safety or threat. They read body language, breathing, tension and intention with remarkable accuracy.

They do not care about hierarchy.
They do not respond to titles.
They respond to presence.

Which is why working with horses can be such a powerful mirror for leadership.

When a leader slows down, regulates themselves and becomes calm and clear, the horse often relaxes and follows.

When the leader is tense, distracted or trying to control the outcome, the horse frequently disengages.

It is immediate feedback on something many teams experience but rarely articulate.
Leadership presence.

In this conversation we explore
• why leadership is deeply connected to the nervous system
• how horses expose inauthentic leadership instantly
• the difference between authority and genuine presence
• why nature can unlock deeper leadership insight than a traditional boardroom
A thoughtful conversation that goes well beyond business and into how leaders regulate themselves, build trust and truly connect with others.
Much of this work now happens at what I call the Natural Boardroom, where leaders step out of traditional meeting spaces and into nature to experience leadership in a very different way.

You can listen to the episode here and a big thankyou to Kylie, Arthur and Bram for inviting me, it was an enjoyable conversation.

Honoured to be published this month in CIPD People Management Magazine UK.

In this article I explore why traditional indoor leadership development often misses the physiological layer of behaviour, and how Live Systems Leadership experiences create measurable shifts in regulation, congruence and influence under pressure.

Most leadership programmes focus on skills and frameworks. Yet when pressure rises, the nervous system decides first.

Working in nature, within live systems, leaders receive immediate feedback on how safety, authority and intention are transmitted biologically. The learning is not metaphorical. It is experiential and translated directly back into workplace scenarios within 24 hours.

For HR and People leaders seeking sustainable behaviour change, this perspective may resonate.
