The Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review lifted modern award minimum wages by 4.75%, from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026.

If you set your pay rates once and haven't touched them since, now's the time to check every classification and employment type, including casual loading, penalty rates and junior rates.

It's one of the most common underpayment issues we see, and it's much cheaper to fix now than after a letter from the Fair Work Ombudsman lands.

Does your contract still say 40 hours a week?

It's one of the most common things we find when we review contracts. Under the National Employment Standards, a full-time employee's maximum ordinary hours are 38 a week, plus reasonable additional hours. Most awards also set out how those extra hours are paid.

A contract that bakes in 40 ordinary hours can mean unpaid overtime every week, and leave calculated on the wrong hours. Small wording, big back pay.

If your contracts haven't been looked at since you opened the doors, we're happy to take a look.

What does it cost to bring HR in-house?

As a rough guide, around $70k for an HR coordinator, around $120k for an HR manager and around $200k for an HR director. That's salary only, before super, leave, recruitment, training and the desk they sit at.

Most hospitality and retail businesses need a bit of all three levels. Strategic advice one week, a pair of hands the next. Just not five days a week, every week.

That's where we come in. A retainer that scales up and down with your business, project work when you need it, and cover when your own HR person is on leave.

Figures are indicative salaries only and vary by location and business size.

We're not a call centre.

When you call Agile HR you get someone who has spent a career in HR across pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants, who knows your award and remembers your business next time you call.

No ticket numbers. No being passed around. Just practical HR support from people who know hospitality and retail, working alongside you for as long as you need us.

Payday Super started on 1 July 2026, and it's one of the biggest payroll changes in years.

Super now has to be paid at the same time as wages, and it needs to reach your employee's fund within 7 business days of payday. A new employee's first payment has 20 business days.

If you pay weekly, that's super every week, not once a quarter. That changes your cash flow, your payroll software settings and possibly your clearing house.

Swipe for the quick version, and give us a shout if you'd like a second pair of eyes on your payroll setup. Setting up HR and payroll systems properly is part of what we do.

Hospo owners, settle this one for us.

What's the hardest shift to fill in your venue?

1. Sunday brekkie
2. Friday close
3. Public holidays
4. Christmas Eve

Drop your number in the comments. Bonus points if you tell us how you finally filled it.

Monday 5 October is a public holiday in Queensland (King's Birthday) and in New South Wales, the ACT and South Australia (Labour Day).

Before the roster goes out, check three things.

1. Your award's public holiday rates. They differ for full-time, part-time and casual staff, and between awards.
2. You can ask staff to work a public holiday, but the request has to be reasonable. They can refuse if it isn't, or if their refusal is reasonable (Fair Work Act 2009, section 114).
3. Who is actually rostered. Public holiday pay applies to people who would ordinarily have worked that day, so check who's on and why.

Not sure which rates apply? Send us a message before Monday.

If hospo job titles were actually accurate.

Anyone who has worked a Saturday night knows the title on the roster is only half the job. The other half is finding cover at 4pm, negotiating last drinks and keeping the kitchen calm when the docket rail is full.

Which one is you? Tell us in the comments, or tag the Duty Manager who deserves a raise.

And if the HR side of running a venue is the bit wearing you down, that's our actual job title. agilehr.com.au

How we work with you.

1. Ongoing support. A permanent HR retainer that scales up and down as your business does.
2. Projects. Contracts, policies, award reviews, recruitment, restructures, and HR and payroll system setup, done properly and handed over.
3. Leave cover. When your HR manager is on leave or moves on, we step in so nothing drops.
4. Ad hoc. Want to try before you buy? Call us in for a one-off job and see how we work.

Not sure which fits? Message us or visit agilehr.com.au and we'll work it out together.

Pubs, clubs, hotels, bottle shops, bakeries, cafés, restaurants, nightclubs and retail.

Hospitality is what we know best. If you run a venue or a shop, you're juggling awards, rosters, casuals and public holidays, usually without an HR manager. That's where we come in, with award and pay checks, contracts and onboarding, rosters and leave, performance and disputes, and recruitment.

Practical HR support, tailored to how your business actually runs.
