**Please share** The ‘NO VIEW TAX’ protest march is on tomorrow, Tuesday 18th March!
If you oppose the city wide view tax on apartment dwellers, get involved! Walk in solidarity to Council Chambers and pledge to have this decision reversed
Background information:
Mayor Tate abolished the view tax in 2013 in his first year as Mayor, declaring it “unfair and fundamentally flawed”, yet last year Council voted to increase rate payers taxes while their own salaries got a pay rise in a double slap in the face for residents on the Gold Coast
Mayor Tate and all elected Councillors voted unanimously in favour of charging the view tax. They and Council staff also chose not to consult with or communicate to the community about their plans, they simply hid the tax in the biannual rates notice as a secret money grab amidst a critical housing and cost of living crisis
Is this lawful? Is this fair?
This is a Council imposed rate increase of up to 50% for owners of apartments from levels 5 and above, increasing incrementally in amount dependent on floor level and size regardless of the view being to the ocean or at rear of building facing another building
