Comraich is a vineyard, olive farming, and mixed grazing property, situated at an altitude of 2,100ft on the rich basaltic soils of the Main Range. It overlooks the Dalrymple Creek valley, at the headwaters of the Condamine River. It is close by the Main Range National Park, the largest area of rainforest in South East Queensland.

When the well's dry, said Benjamin Franklin, we know the worth of water. As absentee farmers, and being reliant on ground water, one of our regular hold-your-breath moments is whether there'll be water when we arrive late on a Friday night.

Comraich's water system is a single gravity fed network of 1 1/2" poly pipe, and any breach can and has drained our main tank. Mornings of -8°C freezing the pipes. Days of 40°C having the opposite effect. Failed fittings. And this week's surprise: our garden irrigation system's timer failed, delicately spraying 50,000 to 70,000 litres on the front lawn! Needless to say, in the current drought, Comraich (that is, only its front lawn) is the greenest spot in the Goomburra Valley!

A morning's sleuthing (to work out what could possibly be happening) and the mandatory $200 trip to Bunnings and all is good. Yes, I know sprinkler timers don't cost $200, but you all know how it is.

Gin O'clock at Comraich - the sun setting on a cool evening after a busy day - mowing the vineyard, tending to the vegie patch, and the perennial repairs to the bore after another calf attack. Small job for tomorrow: fence the bore!

Tonight's accompaniment to Comraich beef - and a wine that will be hard to shift from our personal wine of the year 2018: Pirramimma Winery Petit Verdot 2006. Gorgeously soft tannins, perfect textural balance, deep plum and blackberry.

Congratulations to Ballandean Estate Wines, Ridgemill Estate, and Symphony Hill Wines on their gold medals at the International Saperavi Producers World Prize in Tbilisi, Georgia. These results are a great credit to these wonderful winemakers, and great encouragement to us here at Comraich as our young Saperavi vines continues to grow!

Saperavi grape puts three Granite Belt wineries on the world map.
