Yesterday was Youth Day in South Africa, and I found myself thinking about something I have believed for a long time:

Talent does not start when a role becomes vacant.

It starts much earlier.

• At school
• At subject choice
• At the first conversation about what is possible
• At confidence
• At exposure
• At mentorship
• At someone taking the time to explain how the world of work actually works

After years in recruitment, scaling teams and building people functions across consulting, tech, education, financial services and supply chain, I keep seeing the same gap.

We keep asking industry to find “ready” talent.

But who is building the exposure, confidence and pathways that help young people become ready?

That question has stayed with me.

Because recruitment is what I know deeply. It is what I have done for years. But I also know that recruitment alone cannot solve the bigger workforce problem.

We need to start earlier.

We need to help young people understand where they fit, what they are good at, what industries exist, what skills matter, and how to move with confidence from education into employment.

This is the vision I have been building through TMA Proactive Partners.

Not just recruitment.

A workforce ecosystem.

One that connects schools, tertiary institutions, graduates, employers and industry in a more intentional and practical way.

Youth Day is always a reminder that young people do not lack potential.

Often, they lack access, exposure, guidance and the right support systems.

Now, I finally feel like this vision is starting to come together.

The future of work will not be solved by hiring alone.

It will be solved by building better bridges between education, exposure and employment.
