Did you know horses are incredibly social animals? They typically live in herds of anywhere from 3 to 20 horses, so when it comes to a stable design, it’s important they still have opportunities to see, interact and socialise with their herd mates every day.

Horses can also show signs of stress and depression, often linked to things like isolation, lack of exercise and boredom.

So if you’re planning a new stable build, your horses’ wellbeing should be part of the plan from the very beginning. Good stable design isn’t just about where your horses sleep, it’s about creating an environment where they can thrive!

A well-designed day yard often does more for a property than people expect. By giving horses a dedicated all-weather turnout area, the rest of the paddocks are protected from the wear and mud that comes with wet conditions.

Paired with a solar-powered stable and using our popular Cheval style fronts for ventilation and visibility, this build is a good example of function driving the design as much as aesthetics.

Stable partition walls do more work than most people give them credit for, and getting them right means thinking about the horses on both sides of it - not just the wall itself.

We factor in a few things when we design them, like solid lower sections that can handle a kick without complaint, barred or mesh tops so horses can still see and smell their neighbours, and for horses that don't get along or like a little privacy. Height and configuration also need to match who's actually living either side, since a pony and a warmblood have pretty different requirements.

It's a small design decision that has a real impact on how settled horses are in their environment.
