A healthier planet starts in our kitchens and can help lead the change! This National Nutrition Week, we're supporting the simple changes that everyone can make.

🌏 Choosing local means fewer food miles, lower emissions and fresher flavours..
🌏 Try growing your own - start small by growing herbs or cherry tomatoes in a pot
🌏 By avoiding plastic packaging, we help tackle the 3+ million tonnes of plastic waste generated in Australia each year
🌏 One third of Australia's food goes to waste, but every small change makes a difference. Plan meals, store food well, and love your leftovers!

πŸ‘©β€πŸ³Country Kitchens had a fantastic time at our recent Cooking for 1 or 2 workshop at Dalveen Community Hall, delivered in partnership with STAR Community Services!

Participants got hands-on in the kitchen, making three delicious recipes:
πŸ› Chinese Style Chicken Stir Fry
πŸ₯š Oven Baked Frittata
🍐 Pear and Sultana Rice Pudding

Everyone picked up plenty of practical tips and tricks to make cooking for one or two easier, from preparing simple meals to using versatile ingredients.

A big thank you to Jenelle from STAR Community Services and Country Kitchens facilitators Kerry and Lizzie from Wallangarra QCWA branch for sharing their knowledge and making the workshop such a great morning! πŸ’š

🍳 Why cooking at home is one of the best things you can do for your health

Cooking at home isn't just cheaper, it's one of the simplest ways to eat well. When you cook your own meals, you're in control of what goes in, meaning less added salt, sugar and unhealthy fats, and more fresh veg, fibre and flavour.

Here are a few reasons to get in the kitchen this weekend:

🏠 You control the ingredients and portion sizes
πŸ’° It's almost always cheaper than takeaway
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ It's a great way to spend time with family and friends
πŸ₯— You can pack in extra veg without even trying

You don't need to be a MasterChef! Even a simple homemade meal is great. What's one meal you'll cook at home this week? Tell us below! πŸ‘‡

🍝 A veggie twist on a family favourite!

Start the week with a big bowl of delicious Bolognese that's secretly packed with goodness. This Veggie Bolognese swaps mince for lentils and haloumi, and is simmered with carrot, capsicum and tomato into a rich, hearty sauce served over spaghetti.

βœ… High in fibre thanks to brown lentils
βœ… Haloumi adds protein and flavour (leave it out if you don't have any!)
βœ… Made from affordable pantry staples to make it easy on the budget
βœ… Ready in about 45 minutes

A great way to sneak more veg and legumes into dinner without anyone noticing!

πŸŽƒ Four ways to get more from your pumpkin and reduce food waste:

πŸ₯£ 1. Leave the skin on
There’s no need to peel pumpkin before roasting. The skin softens as it cooks and adds extra texture and flavour.

✨ 2. Turn the skin into crispy chips
Prefer your pumpkin without the skin? Slice the skin thinly, season and roast until crisp. Serve with your favourite dip for a tasty snack.

🧁 3. Give cooked pumpkin a second life
Leftover cooked pumpkin is incredibly versatile. Use it in muffins, scones, soups, pasta sauces or frittatas.

🌱 4. Save the seeds
Scoop out the seeds, clean and roast them with cinnamon for something sweet or your favourite savoury seasoning. Enjoy as a snack, add to granola or sprinkle over salads for some extra crunch.

Using more of the whole pumpkin is a simple way to make your food go further and reduce food waste. πŸŽƒβ™»οΈ

🐟 Are you eating fish twice a week? Fish is a great source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids and important vitamins and minerals, helping to support heart, brain and overall health.

We know canned tuna isn’t everyone’s favourite, but don’t knock our Tuna Melt Parcels until you try them! πŸ˜‹ They’re tasty, easy to make and a great way to enjoy more fish (and veg!).

Still not convinced? Swap the tuna for cooked chicken.
