Sleep Sweet Consulting Parenting is hard enough without the sleep deprivation. First generation cycle breaker and authoritative parent

🚨 STOP buying sleep products before you fix this…

If your baby’s room isn’t pitch black, you could be making sleep harder than it needs to be.

The good news? You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to create a sleep-friendly environment. While roller shutters are my personal favourite (because I’m slightly obsessed with sleep 🤭… and security), there are plenty of budget-friendly ways to block out light.

✨ My favourite blackout hacks:

🖤 DIY or buy blackout blinds.

🖤 Apply foil directly to the windows using water.
I’ve personally used this for up to two months without any issues, but it’s generally best as a short-term solution. Some parents have reported window damage with long-term use, and factors like sun exposure, glass type, foil quality and application can all make a difference.

🖤 Attach foil using Blu Tac or painter’s masking tape instead.

🖤 Cut black rubbish bags to size and secure them to the windows with Blu Tac or painter’s masking tape.

🖤 Cut cardboard to fit your windows.

🖤 Hang blankets or sheets over blinds or curtains.

🖤 Use static-cling blackout window film (like the ErgoPouch version), which can be cut to fit your windows.

💬 Now it’s your turn! What’s the most creative blackout hack you’ve used? Did I miss one? Share it below so other tired parents can benefit too! ⬇️

Save this post for later, and send it to a friend who’s wondering why their little one keeps waking at sunrise.

When authoritarian parenting was all the rage, cry it out style methods were used most.

Now that we’re seeing a shift into authoritative (aka gentle) parenting, understandably cry it out methods are being used less, if at all (thankfully). Unfortunately though the stigma remains.

Those that are wanting their child to sleep independently are wanting to achieve this goal using gentle methods which is actually absolutely attainable without cry it out style methods.

But there are also people who actually don’t want to reach this milestone any time soon - so is that a bad thing? Is it bad to want to continue assisting to sleep?

Actually, no!

Weird coming from a sleep consultant I know, but falling asleep independently is a skill that will eventually be achieved without intervention.

If you’d like to continue assisting your bub to sleep until they are capable to doing it themselves then please do! Do not let the fear mongering of some businesses (or people who it’s none of their business) tell you otherwise.

My job is just to help you achieve this goal sooner that it’ll likely happen on its own. I wouldn’t want to force that on you. Every parents journey is unique as is their desire of how to raise their child/ren.

One thing I always say is “you do you” because if it isn’t affecting me, it’s none of my business. And don’t be afraid to put someone in their place if their nose is somewhere it doesn’t belong 😜

Parenting is 24 hours… but that doesn’t mean you should have to spend the night clocking in every 2 hours to help your child get back to sleep 🫠

Night time is still part of parenting; the cuddles, the reassurance, the “I need water” requests that somehow happen at 2am 😂

When working with me, we look at sleep holistically. We don’t just look at the wakes - we look at why sleep is coming undone in the first place.

Is there an underlying factor like temperature, clothing, light, external sounds or discomfort impacting sleep?
Is it routine related - do they need more or less awake time, a different routine structure, or sleep pressure redistributed differently throughout the day?
Or do we need to support them to develop independent sleep skills in a different way to what we’re currently doing?

Sleep isn’t one size fits all. It’s about understanding your child, finding the missing piece, and creating a plan that supports the whole family.

Because yes, we love them. Yes, we show up for them. But no one functions well sleep deprived and as I always say; parenting is hard enough without the sleep deprivation. So let me help you with the one thing I can; sleep ❤️

✈️ Travelling with your little one soon? Save this post for future reference and share with your jet-setting friends & family!

After 12 years of travelling the world with both my kids, I’ve learnt it doesn’t have to feel as overwhelming as it can. There will be bumps along the way, but with preparation (and realistic expectations), you can still have an amazing trip.

First things first… When you arrive, try to recreate their usual sleep environment where possible:
✔️ Keep sleep safe
✔️ Darken the room
✔️ Bring familiar sleep associations

Next; where are you and is there a time difference?

✨ No time difference:
Continue your usual routine.

✨ Less than 3 hours:
You can either:
1️⃣ Transition straight onto the new time
OR
2️⃣ Stick closer to home time (which may mean a later bedtime if the time moves forward) to give you more flexibility.

If transitioning, consider which direction the time is moving:

➡️ Moving forward?
If your bub can’t make it to the new bedtime, a 10 minute bridging nap can help them get through that first day. Then aim to be back on track the next day.

⬅️ Moving backwards?
Consider capping a nap or skipping one if needed to help with an earlier bedtime.

✨ 4+ hour time difference?
The same tips apply, but help reset their body clock by getting outside ASAP and enjoying natural light.

Most little ones need a few days to adjust, so offer extra support if they need it.

Should you wake your little one from naps or in the morning?

Honestly… it depends on your holiday goals. I prioritise sleep (as you’ll see in my highlights), but I also won’t miss making memories because it’s nap time!

Above all… have fun. Enjoy the holiday. You can always get back on track when you’re home.

When your little one is unwell, their biggest need isn’t independence… it’s you ❤️

Illness is one of those times where we can soften the focus on settling skills and lean into connection, comfort and reassurance.

Extra cuddles, more support, contact naps, feeding for comfort or helping them settle in a way you normally wouldn’t — these things are okay when your child is sick.

A few days (or even a week) of needing more from you won’t undo all the work you’ve done. Once they’re feeling better, you can gently return to your usual routines and expectations.

Right now, your child isn’t trying to create a habit — they’re communicating that they need safety, comfort and their favourite person close by.

Connection first. We can always work back towards independence when they’re well again 🤍

A healthy lifelong sibling relationship starts with the parents and is continued work.

Fostering sibling relationships begins day one with what we call “don’t blame the baby”.

A simple shift in how you structure your sentences can be the difference between your toddler loving or hating their sibling from the very beginning;

Are you feeding the baby when your toddler asks to play?

❎ Don’t say “sorry I can’t play, I’m feeding the baby”
✅ Say “I’d love to play as soon as I’ve finished feeding the baby - do you want to go set up while you wait?”

Is your toddler trying to get your attention while your in the middle of a poonami change with the baby?

❎ Don’t say “Can’t you see I’m busy? I’ll look later!”
✅ Say “I can’t wait to see as soon as I’m finished this nappy change, do you think you can help me find the wipes?” And then praise them for helping you after

These simple shifts don’t make the baby a hindering factor in your lack of time, rather an understanding that they’re still important to you - keep the lines of communication open, you’d be surprised how much they understand!

When my kids were younger, my son truly believed he taught his baby sister to chew her food, crawl and then even walk, and the pride he felt was so beautiful to see.

And it continues on as they are older and things shift - you do from not blaming the baby to now making sure you’re not creating a toxic environment of constant comparisons between them, rather focusing on each child’s positive traits and have them praised constantly. This not only helps the siblings see the good in each other but also builds a great sense of self.

What are your big tips to help foster a great relationship between siblings?

It’s a perfect time for frozen yoghurt any time the sun is out and Melbourne blessed us with a warm and sunny autumn day so I had to check out 🍦
The hype was real!
We were invited on the premise that they boast many flavours and toppings which are all halal friendly and they delivered and then some 🤤
Loved the extra details like UNO and Jenga at each table as well as a park right across the road which can quickly make this a great way to spend the afternoon!
Will definitely come here again and again!
Thanks for having us 🫶🏼
