5 more hollows went in during the second round of carving at Loki’s place. Again a mix of different types of hollows targeting a broad range of known local species.

Another 10 trees are marked out to get hollows carved over the next couple of weeks.

Along with 46 houses, a lot of habitat was lost in the devastating Pomonal fires. Since then we have been carving habitat for a wide range of species known to inhabit the area pre-fires.

Sadly this E. leucoxylon couldn’t cope with its ailment and gave up on life.
Being such a beautiful feature tree, Katja and Andrew wanted to preserve it and give it a second life, turning it into a habitat tree for many years to come.
We created hollows fit for lorikeets and small parrots but we will see who we he lucky tenants are in the coming months.

This hollow is too good not to post.
Entering and creating a hollow in a natural spot is my favourite kind of habitat work.
This hollow will last the life of the tree, grow and develop together with the tree and provide many generations of animals with shelter and nesting options.

The full setup with the dust extraction is making this an easy and efficient task.

A couple of weeks ago we turned this hazardous and declining Blackwood into a perfectly safe habitat trunk with multiple hollows.

This is the ideal outcome for a hazardous backyard tree, with huge ecological value.

Hazard reduction of this Manna gum with extensive white rot and multiple previous failures.

One lorikeet/small parrot hollow was made using the piglet on a battery grinder as well as a coronet cut on top of the trunk.

Lots of marsupial activity at this site!

This client wanted a nest box installed after seeing cambium nibbles on the young Sugar gums and suspected Sugar glider activity.

What started as a nest box trial has quickly turned into the need for many more hollows. Fauna cam footage revealed the high demand for hollows, including multiple Sugar glider families, rare Feather tail gliders, and a chunky Ringtail possum who repeatedly tried to squeeze through the small hole.
Hopefully we will be able to cater for all our furry friends shortly.

What a catch!

This is a taste of what we just collected from a pile destined to be burnt.

If you do have hollowed out logs on your burn pile, have a go at making a nest box or place them in your garden as nursery logs. It’s great for insects, small marsupials and frogs.

The majority of these Red gum logs will become arboreal nest boxes made to replicate natural tree hollows.
