A different day, last Sunday

Representing the Sheep, Camelid and Goat Vets of the AVA President, who was in Ireland, had to fly to Brisbane & back for the AVA’s Council of Presidents meeting.

A good meeting, but Melbourne Airport early, first sign of land coming into Brisbane & Brisbane River from the Airport train. Rest of the day spent in the meeting. Dark by the time I travelled back to Brisbane Airport via a Uber.

Finally, got back to my Melbourne stay at 10:30 pm! Another part of what we do!

Pastures getting away quickly in western VIC at the moment. Some moisture and stratospheric soil temps working wonders. But pastures won’t get away if perennial density is insufficient. On the other hand, if the density is there, plenty of pasture.
We spend plenty of time clients helping to fix problematic pastures and planning pasture improvement to match stocking rate. So everything works to plan.
And lamb feedlot photos to dribble over to boot!

Most western Vic farms are now getting a bit dry - new green pasture hasn’t died yet, but definitely starting to wilt on some farms - some are good and some haven’t seen much rain.

Clover still OK where it can get up, due to warm soil temps and no RLEM, but they are starting to hatch, so check out RLEM hatch tool for your location.

Worms are mostly under control, but need to get WECs done to make sure!

Dry matter levels vary across different farms at the moment - a reflection of patchy rainfall throughout western Victoria and Tasmania. Currently, except for a few that got a bit more rain, a bit of follow-up rain right now would set up the season well. Unfortunately, the more reliable forecast models are suggesting a dry week coming up. Send it down Huey soon!! Please!!! Pretty pl…….

Starting doing some Hypocalcaemia workshops with Elanco & DSM with the help of Elders. It’s been really great to interact with some producers in southern NSW on this problem last week.
Out an about in Western Vic - there is so much dry feed, but for many farms, there is a lot of green feed coming through, and given good soil temps, and no RLEM yet, the clover is trying to reach the sun! Might end up with better clover % than we might have expected!
Stock still in good condition.

Recently in Tassie seeing clients and had a terrific week. Stock in great condition, but a real mix of rainfall around Tassie. Had some good sessions with our Life After Lifetime Ewe groups - one northern group & one down south. On the other hand, prices of fuel started to rise to ridiculous levels. Couldn’t get on the night boat, so had a day trip back - with the sea as smooth as glass, and probably the gentlest trip I’ve ever had across Bass Strait.

Buying fodder? It’s important to consider the biosecurity risks that can come with introduced feed.

Feeding purchased fodder in a designated containment area, such as a feedpad or sacrifice paddock, helps limit the spread of unwanted weeds and pests and makes it easier to monitor and quickly control anything new that emerges.

When sourcing fodder, particularly from interstate, check permit requirements and request a Commodity Vendor Declaration (CVD) with every load. This is currently a free service, including permits and inspections where required, to help protect Victoria from serious pests and diseases.

A few photos from recent farm visits…

Plenty of dry feed, not much left in fodder crops now, but responding from March rain now…

And as a result, stock were fat and sitting down a lot chewing their cud….

But now clients are starting to draft out tails and feed everything at various rates….

That’s probably required for most to maintain stock condition…

Words can’t describe the sadness of the Bondi massacre…

Thoughts are with survivors, relatives & friends…..

This will be a tough journey….

There is a sense that Australia has changed…

2 victims were Holocaust survivors, only to be shot dead at Bondi Beach…

Beyond words…
