May 27, 1911 — Happy Birthday to Vincent Price.

More than just a horror actor, Vincent Price became one of the true faces of gothic cinema. With his elegant voice, mysterious presence, and unforgettable performances, he transformed classic horror into something poetic, theatrical, and timeless.

For many gothic fans, his portrayal of Roderick Usher in House of Usher remains one of the greatest Edgar Allan Poe interpretations ever put on screen. The haunted atmosphere, the crumbling mansion, and Price’s melancholic performance helped define the visual language of gothic horror for generations to come.

From The Pit and the Pendulum to The Masque of the Red Death, Vincent Price brought intelligence, darkness, and beauty into every role he played. Even today, his influence can still be felt in gothic culture, horror cinema, noir aesthetics, and dark storytelling everywhere.

Some legends never truly leave the shadows.

But there is no discord in this hierarchical relationship: with a delightful smile, the hybrid creature acknowledges the touch of the guardian angel, who is beginning to merge into the background. Khnopff’s photograph depicts a harmonious coexistence of ideal and nature, represented by the figures.
