π¦πΊβοΈ Australia needs construction workers and mining needs many of the same skills.
Australiaβs construction workforce is facing significant shortages, and that demand is also flowing into the mining industry.
Mining projects rely heavily on construction and trade skills to build, expand and maintain mine sites. Jobs and Skills Australia notes that mining and construction compete for workers with skills in earthmoving, drilling, electrical work and other ground-based operations.
At the same time, Australiaβs mining industry continues to report shortages across occupations ranging from drillers and drivers to engineers, geologists and skilled trades.
That makes construction and trade experience particularly relevant for people looking at mining opportunities.

There is also a major policy development. Since 25 July 2026, Ministerial Direction 119 places eligible construction occupations among the third-highest skilled visa processing priority for applicants who are already in Australia, alongside healthcare and teaching.
That does not guarantee a visa or a mining job applicants still need to meet the relevant requirements but it shows how important construction skills have become to Australiaβs workforce needs.
For tradies and construction workers considering mining or FIFO, your existing skills may have more pathways than you think. π¦πΊβοΈ
