I was never much help to Heyfield Cricket Club on the field π Turns out I'm a lot better at building websites than I ever was at cricket.
I don't play anymore, but it's a club I've got a lot of time for, so it's been really nice to help out in a way that's actually useful.
After building ClubCast for Heyfield Golf Club Inc, I started wondering if I could do something similar for cricket.
Most local clubs already put all their scores, fixtures and ladders into PlayHQ every week. So I asked myself, what if a club website could just pull all of that in automatically, without anyone having to update it?
Heyfield Cricket Club has been around since 1886 but has never had a website of its own, so it felt like the perfect place to find out.
I built a first version to show the committee what was possible, they loved it, and the club got us access to PlayHQ's data. From there it was all about making it as good as I could.
The new website is connected straight to PlayHQ, so it runs itself. Every score, result, ladder and stat updates on its own, all season, for every team. Nobody at the club has to type a thing in.
There's plenty to explore, including:
π Live scores for every Heyfield team on game day
π Result notifications, so supporters get a message on their phone the moment their team's game finishes
π
Your team's whole season in your phone's calendar, which updates itself if a game moves
π¦οΈ The weather forecast for each game, at the ground it's being played on
π Fixtures, ladders and player stats for the 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, Women and Under 13s
βοΈ Sign up to play, for seniors and juniors
π± A fully responsive mobile experience
What I love most about this one is the people it helps. Partners, parents, old players and supporters who can't make it down on a Saturday can now follow the game from wherever they are. And the volunteers who already do so much for the club don't have another job added to their list.
Player stats will be on there once the season gets going. Lucky my bowling figures won't be.
The new Heyfield Cricket Club website is now live.
