Sean Mason from Agronomy Solutions has been involved in the filming of a South Australian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub video at Pinnaroo, discussing the Hub-supported project being led by Mallee Sustainable Farming that he is assisting with.

The project is looking at the management of input costs and risk by zoning in different soil types, understanding input requirements in different zones, and fertilising accordingly.

Sean is pictured second from right being filmed for the video by Daniel Koulouris from AgCommunicators with Mallee Sustainable Farming Extension Officer, Kylie Matthewson, and SA Drought Hub Loxton Node Coordinator and Node Team Leader, Kym Walton.

This week marked the end of the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s National Grower Network (NGN) southern members group, which Agronomy Solutions’ Sean Mason has been a part of for the past three years.

The group’s final combined meeting was held over two days in Glenelg (SA) where the members’ input and contributions were acknowledged and celebrated.

The NGN members have been responsible for identifying cropping issues and opportunities, and informing GRDC investment in research, development and extension.

Sean (pictured below at right with GRDC Southern Region Panel member and Eyre Peninsula grower Michael Treloar and other NGN members) thanks the Grains Research and Development Corporation for involving him in the network and providing him with "an opportunity to mix with some of the industry's best".

The Agronomy Solutions team has hit the ground running with this new SAGIT project.

Sites have been selected and soil analysis obtained - now we're just waiting for some rain!

NEW PROJECT!

What's new in SAGIT-funded initiatives starting in 2022-23?

This demonstration project aims to provide valuable information on immediate and longer-term sulphur management options applicable to a wide range of growing regions.

The project aims are to be achieved by (1) comparing different forms of sulphur fertilisers for mobility and availability within soil profiles with detailed profile sampling, and (2) impact of two different crop types in sulphur accessibility due to varying rooting depths.

Not sure about what fertiliser to apply and how much?

Test strips could help provide the answers.

The GRDC’s Fertiliser Fact Sheet, developed with input from Agronomy Solutions’ Sean Mason, is a handy guide to setting up test strips and using the data for fertiliser decisions.

Download the Fact Sheet via https://bit.ly/3tNfLy6.

Growers looking to refine their fertiliser strategy are encouraged to use test strips this season to help determine what nutrients are lacking and how much is required.

It’s not just grain crops that Agronomy Solutions director Sean Mason gets to play with!

One of Sean’s latest glasshouse trials at The Plant Accelerator (Australian Plant Phenomics Facility) at the Waite research precinct involves nutrient testing for a range of horticultural crops, including lettuce, soybean and capsicum.

If it grows in soil, Sean’s ready to roll up the sleeves and put it to the test.

Wind erosion could play havoc with soil nutrition and fertiliser decisions for future crops.

Find out what can be done to protect precious topsoil in this GRDC podcast.

The podcast discusses findings from ‘using soil and plant testing data to better inform nutrient management and optimise fertiliser investments for grain growers in the southern region.’

HELP US HELP YOU
We know you might be thinking, “I really need to move those sheep and spray that paddock” – and you’re right. But first, please take a brief moment to give us your thoughts on wind erosion, which has become a significant problem across low rainfall farming areas in recent dry years.

It is a multiple-choice survey that might take 15 mins. There are no long answers required and no need to think back 20 years.

Whatever stage of erosion you are facing, your expertise is crucial to help us discover practical solutions that are clear, accessible, relatable, and adaptable for growers.
