A little friendly competition never hurts! ⛳🕹️🏀

Our team recently headed just down the road to P1 Entertainment Complex for an afternoon away from the office. A great chance to catch up with those outside our usual teams, share a few laughs and test our skills on the golf simulators, arcade games and more.

Social catch-ups like this are a big part of life at Brentnalls SA. We love making time to step away from our desks and get to know each other beyond the day-to-day.

🏃 We’re proud to celebrate a wonderful example of what community and teamwork looks like at Brentnalls SA. Georgia Woolley from our Administration Team, recently organised a group for the 6km City-Bay Fun Run in support of her mum and one of our very own, Amanda, who is facing brain cancer. Colleagues, family and friends came together to walk, run and raise funds for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

✨ “Thank you to everyone who has donated to Cure Brain Cancer Foundation so far and an ever bigger thanks to those who joined us on the 6km walk yesterday, Mum had a great time, and she appreciated having you there to walk with her.

Every donation helps support vital brain cancer research and brings hope for better treatments and outcomes for people diagnosed with this devastating disease in the future.

Thank you again for getting behind Mum, our family and the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. We feel very lucky to have such a supportive group of people around us.” ✨

A special thank you to Georgia who brought this meaningful initiative to life and to everyone who is rallying around Amanda and her family. We’re honoured to work alongside people who show such care, compassion and commitment to making a difference.

It’s not too late to donate. If you have the means, please donate via our fundraising page and help support this important cause: https://tinyurl.com/266p7ub6

Do you use a discretionary trust for your small business, investments, property or estate planning?

Draft legislation proposes a new 30% tax on the taxable income of many discretionary trusts from 1 July 2028. Some trusts and types of income would be excluded, but the changes could still leave certain beneficiaries paying more tax - particularly where they have little or no other income.

There is no need to rush into changes while the law is still in draft. However, it is worth understanding what is being proposed and how it could affect you.

Brentnalls SA Partner, Sally Storey, unpacks the draft proposal including who may be affected, how the tax could work and the options being considered.

From 1 October 2026, the way businesses manage card payment costs is set to change.

Separate surcharges for major prepaid, debit and credit card payments are expected to be phased out across the main card networks. While the cost of accepting card payments will not disappear, businesses may need to rethink how those costs are managed – from pricing and margins to customer communications.

A valuable few days for learning, discussion and connection for Sally Storey - Partner, Shannon Sims - Principal, and Managers Peter Orr and Courtney Duffy, who represented Brentnalls SA at The Tax Institute Barossa Convention last week.

The multi-day event brought together accounting, law, financial services and regulatory professionals from across the country to explore current technical tax issues, share insights and connect with peers across the industry.

The program covered key issues shaping the current tax landscape, including:
✏️ State taxes
✏️ Division 296 (superannuation)
✏️ Property development
✏️ Family Trust Distributions Tax
✏️ Recent federal budget announcements

Sally summed up the value of the event well; “At a time of huge change and uncertainty in the tax system, there is nothing better than two days of discussion and debate amongst the country’s top tax professionals.”

Thank you to The Tax Institute for hosting such an engaging and relevant event.

The ATO recently released updated guidance that may significantly affect holiday homeowners who rent out their property on a short-term or occasional basis.

From this financial year, the greater emphasis will be placed on whether a property is held mainly to generate rental income. Ongoing costs such as loan interest, insurance, repairs and depreciation may no longer be deductible.

In our latest article, we explain what’s changing, which expenses may be affected, and what holiday homeowners should review now.

Identity verification is becoming a more prominent part of doing business in Australia.

With accounting, conveyancing, legal, real estate, trust and company service providers now captured under Australia’s expanded AML/CTF framework, more businesses and professional advisers are likely to see additional verification steps become part of certain engagements.

For accounting firms, the focus is on making these checks clear, secure and as efficient as possible while meeting new compliance obligations.
