We will hear from two specialists in their fields. The first is our own home organising and decluttering queen Fiona, the face of Ace of Space, and the other is Paul, from a new service to Tasmania, Rate my Home Energy Assessments.

INSULATION:
Did you know that more insulation is NOT always better?

It’s common thinking that the more insulation a house has, the warmer the house will be. But unfortunately, this is often not the case.

Achieving thermal efficiency in a home is all about BALANCE.

Imagine you’re living in a tin shed and you decide to install R2 insulation batts in the ceiling to make it warmer. Does it work? A little bit – you feel somewhat warmer. You now get excited so you upgrade to R5 insulation batts in the ceiling. Is there a noticeable improvement? Sadly NO!

Because the walls and floors aren’t insulated and there is a big single glazed window on the east side, the heat will simply hit the ceiling and exit through the walls. Whether the ceiling has R2 or R5 doesn’t make a difference.

I see many people waste money installing too much insulation in their homes. Please think carefully about your home’s design and construction materials before spending big bucks upgrading your insulation.

Replacing single glazed windows with double glazed is EXPENSIVE!

Unfortunately, many older homes won’t benefit much from having double glazed windows installed unless other issues are addressed first.
