As an occupational hygienist, I want to share a quick, clear update about the recent recall of several coloured and “kinetic-style” sand products sold across Australia.
What’s happened:
Recent testing has found small concentrations of asbestos in some batches of coloured craft and play sand sold in major retailers and used in many schools, childcare centres, and homes.
The good news:
So far, testing has identified concentrations of respirable fibres in areas of concern are less than the level of detection, which means the immediate health risk is considered low.
However, with asbestos containing products, a risk-based approach with suitable controls, along with clear, concise, and accurate communication, is important to ensure the risk remains low.
⚠️ URGENT RECALL: CHILDREN'S PLAY SAND ⚠️
ACCC Product Safety has issued an urgent recall on decorative coloured sand products sold in Australia which may contain asbestos. The sand has been imported by Modern Star and sold at Officeworks and other retailers.
Recalled products include:
⚠️ Educational Colours - Rainbow Sand (1.3kg)
⚠️ Creatistics - Coloured Sand (1kg)
⚠️ Kadink - Sand (1.3kg).
