FLEA MYTHS — TRUE OR FALSE? TOWNSVILLE EDITION.

1. 'Fleas go away in the dry season in Townsville.' FALSE — our climate is warm enough year-round for active flea populations. August through September is peak indoor flea season as pets spend more time inside.

2. 'Treating my pet stops the flea problem.' FALSE — adult fleas on the pet are only ~5% of the total population. Eggs, larvae and pupae are in your carpet, bedding and skirting gaps.

3. 'Vacuuming thoroughly after treatment removes the product and stops it working.' TRUE — don't vacuum for 14 days after a professional flea treatment. The residual on carpet fibres needs time to work through hatching pupae.

4. 'You can get fleas even without a pet.' TRUE — flea pupae can remain dormant in empty properties for months, waiting for vibration and warmth to hatch.

5 FACTS ABOUT COCKROACHES THAT SHOULD CHANGE HOW YOU CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN.

1. A cockroach can survive up to a week without its head — it only dies afterwards because, without a mouth, it can't drink water and dies of thirst.

2. Cockroaches can run up to five kilometres an hour, fast enough to disappear before most people even react.

3. German cockroaches breed fastest of all species and need gel bait, not surface spray — spraying scatters the colony instead of eliminating it.

4. American cockroaches thrive in Townsville's drains and subfloor spaces, often entering homes from outside after rain.

5. A visible cockroach at night usually means dozens more are hidden behind appliances and wall cavities during the day.

Fire Ants in Queensland – What to Do If You Spot a Mound

Fire ants remain a serious biosecurity threat in Queensland — a painful sting, aggressive swarming when disturbed, and a documented history of agricultural and ecological damage where they establish.

Townsville sits outside the current primary infestation zone, but the containment effort is ongoing.

If you spot a dome-shaped mound with no obvious entry holes, often appearing after rain:
• Don't disturb it
• Don't treat it yourself
• Photograph it from a safe distance
• Report it to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23
