Funny thing about solar loans, people get stuck on the word loan and forget they're already paying for power every single quarter regardless.

Real question is whether the repayment lands under what you're currently handing over each quarter. For some houses it does, for some it doesn't, depends entirely on your usage and your current bill.

Also worth knowing there's an interest free loan through the NSW government for households that qualify, and we'll check your eligibility for you.

Anyway, back to the point, you're paying for power one way or another already, question's just which version costs you less.

Fill in the form and we'll run the numbers for your place.

Pulled up an actual Amber Electric bill on my phone and walked through it, wholesale pricing swings all day and if you're someone who can shift your usage around it can work in your favour.

If you're not home to manage it, or you just want a flat predictable bill, it's probably not for you.

Sat down and went through the big home batteries one by one, Tesla Powerwall 3, Sungrow, Sigenergy, GoodWe, Alpha ESS and Fox ESS, on size and bulk, how the install actually goes, the design of the thing on your wall, and brand reputation, full video's up now.

Quick caveat before I answer this, because everyone wants a straight yes or no here. Doesn't work like that.

Panel prices have come down and battery tech's improved a fair bit these last couple of years, so the maths on the whole thing has genuinely shifted.

Someone who's out at work all day and home after dark is looking at a completely different case to someone who's home all day running the aircon and the washing machine.

Send through your last couple of power bills if you want an honest read on where you actually sit.

Payback period is the question everyone asks first, and it depends on more than the size of your system. Your usage pattern, your tariff, and how much of what you generate you actually use at home versus feed back to the grid, that's what shifts the number one way or the other. We'll run it for your specific house rather than quote you an average that means nothing.

Under the current rules, anything over 100kW misses out on the upfront rebate homes get and is stuck with large-scale certificates that trickle in over years.

The government wants to lift that threshold to 1MW, so bigger systems could create STCs and claim the value straight away instead of waiting on it.

On the examples published so far, that's about $68,000 off a 250kW system and roughly $232,000 off an 850kW one, somewhere around 20% off the upfront cost. A full megawatt system could land near $250,000, though the final number depends on the rules and your project.

It's due to start October 2026 and still needs the regulations locked in, so none of this is confirmed yet.

If your roof's got the space to make it worthwhile, we'll run the feasibility numbers for free. No obligation, nothing to sign.

Everyone assumes a battery keeps the power on when the grid drops. Not for most systems.

The grid cuts out and a standard solar and battery setup shuts down too, deliberately, so the linesmen working the lines outside don't cop a shock from your system feeding back in.

Real blackout backup needs the right gear and wiring behind it, and plenty of installs skip that part entirely.

Good thing to check first.

The federal government says the expanded rebate could cut around 20% off a system over 100kW, which on a full megawatt project works out to roughly $250,000 based on the examples published so far. None of that is available yet, and the final regulations still need to be settled. It's due to start from October 2026, pending those regulations, and the businesses who'll benefit most are the ones doing the sums this year.

...so no, you don't need to rip the whole system out and start again.

Your panels stay on the roof, they don't care how old they are as long as they're not damaged. The inverter's the bit that sometimes needs swapping, depends what you've currently got and what battery you're adding.

Send us a photo of your switchboard and your inverter, that tells us most of what we need before we even come out, and from there we can usually tell you within a day or two what's involved.

Some setups it's a straightforward add-on job. Others need a bit more rewiring. Won't know which one you are until we see it.

"Is the crew who quotes me the same crew that installs it?"

Ask any solar company that question and watch how fast the room goes quiet. Nine times out of ten it's subcontracted out to whoever's free that week.

Subbies get paid per job, so speed pays and care doesn't always come first. Can't blame them, it's just how the model works.

Problem is it's your roof and your waterproofing on the line. If something leaks in three years you want the same people picking up the phone, someone who actually remembers the job.
