HAVE SOME RESPECT! 🐴

Working on the road, away from family and loved ones, is demanding enough. Equine practitioners put in long hours, travel considerable distances and carefully organise their schedules to provide a service for you and your horses.

📢 IF YOU NEED TO CANCEL, PLEASE LET US KNOW!

A simple phone call or message is all it takes. If your plans change, you’ve changed your mind, or you’ve decided to use another practitioner, that’s absolutely fine. Just have the courtesy to cancel your appointment and let us know.

We plan our runs, pay for fuel, travel long distances and often turn down other work to honour our bookings. Being left waiting or travelling to an appointment when nobody has bothered to cancel is frustrating, costly and disrespectful.

We love what we do, but our time is valuable too.

Whether it’s your equine bodyworker, dentist or farrier, remember that we are people with families, responsibilities and livelihoods.

You have every right to change your plans, but you also have a responsibility to communicate those changes.

Respect goes both ways. If you expect professionalism from us, please show us the same respect in return.

DON’T GHOST YOUR PRACTITIONER. CANCEL YOUR APPOINTMENT!

A little communication goes a long way.

So "you got your horse's teeth done". And the person was "so good, they didn't need any sedation or a speculum". And they didn't use any motorized instruments.

That describes MY dentistry from 1987-1994. I had horrific dentistry training in veterinary school. One of my equine professors actually taught us that speculums were a thing of the past, were dangerous, and that you needed two people to apply one to a horse's head. All crap.

In around 1994 I met several non-veterinarians whose clients would pay me to show up and (legally, with my veterinary license) sedate dentistry patients for these other people to perform dental procedures for. I was just the drug guy. No interest learning this aspect of horse care. I was a rare veterinarian who wanted to support people who were not veterinarians instead of just continuing to charge money for my own crappy work and crappy results.

Then I had an epiphany, which was amplified by one of these men preparing to follow his wife's corporate job and move away....3,000 miles away.

He said "Doc, if you will send every dentistry patient you possibly can to me, and sedate every possible dentistry patient I can lay my hands on in the next six months, i will teach you everything.I know that you can learn in six months. I learned right away that that distinction meant that there was a tremendous amount I would not learn for years down the line, which can only be assimilated with a lot of sweat and dirty hands. The learning curve was slow. There was so much to learn that I had no idea even existed. A few years later I learned that my mentor had worked all around the world and was considered one of the top practitioners anywhere. Oh yeah, he was known to charge a $1000 a day to ride along with him and see what he does and how he does it. My fee? Sedate horses, watch and listen. ,

I did not know that I would make a career helping horses with the maladies that accumulate unattended way in the back of their mouths, as far back as their eyes. Like many veterinarians, i had been taught to rub a couple of upper teeth with my thumb and determine if there were sharp edges. That has to be one of the most worthless diagnostic exercises in veterinary medicine. One of my early veterinary mentors, years before I was admitted to veterinary school, used to say "you might as well p**s in his ear" as far as the treatment or diagnostic value of some of the stupid things people do to evaluate and treat animals..

But because teeth are hidden inside that big, dark cave behind lips and cheeks, a lot of charlatans can take your money and look like they stayed busy in your horse's mouth for twenty or thirty minutes while all they accomplished was smoothing a few upper teeth. Hard facts. Which teeth? Exactly the teeth that the horse would allow access to without sedation or a speculum. Making sense?

Only about half of my clients want to venture deep into the horse's mouth (see teeth numbered 10 and 11) with their fingers and feel the before and after of my work. I refer to it as "this way you can see where your money is going".

If you want to feel the before and after the next time I come to your place, just ask. It's YOUR HORSE and YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY.

If you are not getting a written dental record listing all the things that happened to your horse while you were spending money on their teeth, ask why not.
