Lest we forget. I remember being a young kid under 10 and so worried about the young men in our community. Service is hard enough when joining up is by choice, those lads who were drawn in the birthday ballot were so brave.

Today is National Servicemen’s Day, when we pause to remember more than 290,000 men who have served Australia through compulsory military service between 1951 and 1972.

Most Australian men who turned 20 years of age were required to register in the National Service scheme of 1964-72. Twice a year, some of these men were called to serve through a random selection system depending on their birth date, known as the ‘birthday ballot’.

More than 804,000 men registered, with more than 63,000 called to serve. More than 15,000 of them served in the Vietnam War where some 200 lost their lives and more than 1,200 were wounded.

We will never forget the service and sacrifice of all the National Servicemen who stepped up to serve Australia.

The service of the ‘Nashos’ will be remembered today during the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. A representative from the National Servicemen's Association of Australia will lay a wreath.

Sad day

The founder of national science institution Questacon, Professor Michael Gore, has died in Canberra.

When working as a physics lecturer at the Australian National University, Professor Gore came up with the idea to create an educational science centre for children and families to visit.

He went on to become the founding director of Questacon, inspiring budding scientists all over the country with his enthusiasm and passion for science.

The situation in Afghanistan is impacting people in our community in many different ways.

There are a load of things impacting our mental health and some confronting media around all of them. However… We aren’t the first generation of soldiers to experience this.

Those who have gone before have not only paved the way for us to get the support we need. They fought tooth and nail for it when they came home.
