The Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet advises that a State Funeral Service for the Honourable Norman Henry Lacy will take place at 11.00 am on Tuesday 19 May 2026 at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Camberwell, Victoria.

Norman was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 1973, representing both Ringwood and Warrandyte. During his time in Parliament, Norman served as Assistant Minister of Education (1979-1981), Minister for the Arts (1979-1982), and Minister for Educational Services (1981-1982).

A State Funeral for Professor the Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO will be held at St James’ Church, King Street, Sydney on Wednesday, 4 February 2026 at 10:30 am.

The service will celebrate the remarkable life of Dame Marie, who served as the first female Governor of New South Wales from 2001 to 2014, bringing to the role immense dignity and compassion.

National Day of Mourning to honour victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack

The Prime Minister has announced a National Day of Mourning on Thursday, 22 January 2026, to honour the victims and all those impacted by the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. The theme that the Chabad Community in Bondi has chosen is ‘Light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance’.

Australians are invited to observe a minute of silence at 7:01pm AEDT and to leave a candle on their doorstep or window. National institutions in Canberra and New South Wales will be illuminated on the evening of Thursday, 22 January. Institutions around Australia are encouraged to participate.

As a mark of mourning and respect, and in accordance with protocol, the Australian National Flag should be flown at half-mast all day on Thursday, 22 January 2026, Australia-wide and at Australian overseas posts from all buildings and establishments occupied by Australian Government departments and affiliated agencies.

State and territory governments and organisations around Australia are encouraged to participate in flying their flags at half-mast and to light up buildings.

When flying the Australian National Flag with other flags, all flags in the set should be flown at half-mast.

National Day of Reflection
Bondi Beach attack, 14 December 2025


The Hon Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister, in conjunction with the Hon Chris Minns MP, Premier of New South Wales, have announced a National Day of Reflection will be held on Sunday, 21 December 2025 to honour the victims of the horrific terrorist attack at Bondi Beach and to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.

The National Day of Reflection will be observed on the final day of Chanukah, a time traditionally associated with light, faith and resilience, making the loss felt by the Jewish community even more profound.

People across the country are invited to light a candle at 6:47pm, exactly one week since the attack unfolded, as a quiet act of remembrance with family, friends or loved ones.

We are also asking Australians to observe a minute of silence at 6:47pm.

United Nations Day

United Nations Day is observed in Australia on 24 October each year to commemorate the entry into force of the United Nations Charter in 1945. Through the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, the United Nations officially came into being. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations. Where there are two or more flagpoles of equal height available, the United Nations Flag should be flown alongside the Australian National Flag all day on Friday, 24 October 2025, from all buildings and establishments occupied by Australian Government departments and affiliated agencies.

If two flagpoles of equal height are available, the Australian National Flag should be flown in the pre-eminent position with the United Nations Flag on the second flagpole for the day. The United Nations Flag should be the same size as the Australian National Flag.

The United Nations Flag should not replace the Australian National Flag. If there is only one flagpole available, one flagpole is higher than others, or a United Nations Flag is not available, normal arrangements for flying the Australian National Flag apply.

The South Australian Department of the Premier and Cabinet advises that a State Funeral for the Hon Sir Eric James Neal AC CVO, 32nd Governor of South Australia will take place at 11.00am on Wednesday, 24 September 2025 at St Peter’s Cathedral, North Adelaide.

The service will acknowledge Sir Eric’s achievements as a highly respected businessman, who dedicated his life to serving the South Australian community through public service, business leadership and charity.

State, territory and local government bodies, as well as non-government organisations, are also welcome to follow this protocol.

Australian National Flag Day on 3 September 2025 marks 124 years since the Australian National Flag was first officially flown in 1901 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne – the site of Australia’s first Parliament.

Australian National Flag Day is an opportunity for all Australians to observe this anniversary by flying or displaying the flag.

In accordance with flag protocol, Australian Government departments and portfolio agencies are requested to fly or display the Australian National Flag all day on Wednesday, 3 September 2025. Other organisations are encouraged to follow this protocol.

The date of 3 September also marks Merchant Navy Day. It is an opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of thousands of Australia’s merchant mariners during wartime operations. Organisations and individuals commemorating Merchant Navy Day may fly the Australian red ensign. When the Australian red ensign is flown along with the Australian National Flag, the Australian National Flag should be flown in the position of honour.

The Queensland Department of Premier and Cabinet advises that a State Funeral Service for Sir Leo Hielscher AC at 2 pm on Thursday, 28 August 2025 at Brisbane City Hall, 64 Adelaide Street, Brisbane City, Queensland.

Sir Leo shaped modern Queensland’s economy and was a state-builder who served the people of Queensland for close to 70 years.

Sir Leo’s vital contributions to the growth of Queensland across many industries won him recognition at the highest levels. He received the Knight Bachelor in 1987 for his outstanding and distinguished service as an Officer of the Crown. In 2004, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for service to economic growth and development, to business and finance, and to the community through strong support for major arts, cultural, sporting and charitable organisations.
