Typically, when people find out they are speaking to an archaeologist they usually ask one of two questions –

‘You must really love dinosaurs!’ (we do and nice try).

‘You must have really loved Indiana Jones as a kid. You got the hat and the whip at home?’

Well, we don’t have whips. Truly, we don’t. Sorry to disappoint.

The hat however…

On this day in 1981 the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released in cinemas. Forty-five years later, Indiana Jones is still an icon and arguably the most famous fictional archaeologist in the world. Happy 45th anniversary ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’! You are beloved by many, including us.

Good design starts with understanding place.

Connecting with Country is a process that brings Aboriginal cultural knowledge into the planning and design of the built environment. Through consultation, research and collaboration with Traditional Custodians and Knowledge Holders, projects can respond to the unique history, ecology and cultural values of Country.

At Everick Heritage, we work closely with Traditional Owners, Aboriginal Knowledge Holders and Local Aboriginal Land Councils, alongside architects, landscape architects and project teams, to ensure cultural knowledge is embedded within the planning and design process and informs Country-centred outcomes for new development.

The inaugural Queensland Archaeological Colloquium took place on 19 May 2026 at the UQ Atrium located in Brisbane City. The colloquium brought together 100 cultural heritage specialists, industry representatives, academics and Traditional owners from across Queensland to discuss the significant issues and ideas that are affecting cultural heritage within the state, now and into the future.

The coordinating committee for the Colloquium included –
Michael Westaway (UQ)
Shoshanna Grounds (NGH)
Tanja Harding (Everick)
Ian Scott (Everick)
Luke Kirkwoord (Jacobs)

The day started with a Welcome to Country led by Refiti Tovi from the Turrbal People. The rest of the days program was split into four sessions, covering the topics of heritage practice, AI and emerging practices, scientific methods, and policy and reform within the industry. At the end of each session there was a Panel discussion, which were all well received. Everick representatives participated in two of the Panels

· Tanja Harding facilitating discussions around cumulative impacts on Aboriginal cultural heritage through increasing and competing industry development on Country with the high demand for CSG and the push for renewable energy with Iman People representatives Andrew Donges, Dwayne King and Leo Rebel.
· Tim Robins participating in a discussion on the future of cultural heritage practice.

The Colloquium was a huge success, being both thought provoking and engaging. Some of the highlights from the event included Vicus’ approach to dating, the discussion into the harmful effects industries have on cultural heritage, the emerging challenges faced by the rise of AI, and the general future of cultural heritage both legislatively and scientifically.
