The view from the other side

5:45pm, Wednesday 26 June 2019
Ferguson Room, upstairs at the National Library of Australia, Parkes Place
Light refreshments before and after; all welcome

Join two best-selling authors Karen Viggers and Inga Simpson in conversation with Kaaren Sutcliffe at our general meeting on 26th June.

We know what it is like to work on a piece as an editor, but what is the view like from the other side? Let’s hear from two acclaimed authors about their life as writers and their experiences in working with editors. Are editors a blessing or a curse? Or perhaps a mixture. What does a best-practice author-editor relationship look like from the writer’s perspective?

Brave the winter cold and join us to hear from these talented writers about their writing, how they have worked with their editors, and the contribution editors have made to their writing.

And keep fending off the June chill by joining us for a convivial dinner at 8pm after the talk at The Lemongrass Thai at 65 London Circuit, Civic. Please email Kaaren at [email protected] if you are coming to the dinner so she can reserve a table.
About the author-editor duo

Karen Viggers is an award-winning, internationally-acclaimed Australian author. She has four novels published with Allen & Unwin and says: ‘I write about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people. Everything arises from landscape, character and place.’ Karen is a wildlife veterinarian who has worked and travelled in many remote parts of Australia, from Antarctica to the Kimberley. Her novels are known for their evocative portrayal of Australian people and landscapes. With books translated into French, Italian, Norwegian, Slovenian and Spanish, Karen is on her way to the milestone of a million books sold.

Inga Simpson is a nature writer and novelist, with four books published and a fifth imminent. Her books have been shortlisted for a number of awards, and she was the winner of the (final) Eric Rolls Nature Essay Prize. Inga has PhDs in creative writing and English literature. Prior to becoming a writer, her first career was as a professional writer and researcher, including for federal Parliament and the Commonwealth Ombudsman. Inga’s books also explore the complex relationships between people and the environment.

Can you be an editor and not know something about web accessibility these days?

Probably not. It’s a requirement of all government web services and so we eventually will find ourselves needing to know about WCAG2.0 and our role in implementing it for the content we are working on.

Cathy Nicoll will lead us through the basic concepts underpinning web accessibility, the things we need to look for as editors, and how it all relates to the Australian Standards for Editing Practice.

Bring your ideas and experience. The web development sector isn’t accustomed to working with editors, so we’d love to hear your experiences in the web publication cycle.

Cathy Nicoll AE is an editor, writer, and trainer who has been working on government websites since the mid-1990s. In that time, web accessibility has gone from something she told clients they needed to consider, to being a requirement of almost every piece of content she works on.

Do It In Style, Wed 29 March, from 5.45 in the Ferguson Room at the National Library.

We will enjoy a few drinks and nibbles before settling down to hear a committee report and then our guest speaker, Dr Lisa Lines.

Lisa’s workshop is about Style Sheets, a vital part of our business. The Australian Editing Handbook provides an excellent explanation of what a style sheet is, and how it should be used. It lists two sections that should be included in any style sheet. However, depending on the context in which you are working, a style sheet can also include four other important sections that aren’t covered by the Australian Editing Handbook.

Lisa will explain how to use a style sheet properly to ensure absolute consistency in any document that you are editing. The talk is mainly aimed at beginner to intermediate editors, but it is also relevant to writers who wish to learn how to achieve consistency in their writing. And it is always useful for experienced editors to have a refresher!
