Yellow-horned Clerid Beetle (Family: Cleridae)

Short entomological description:
The yellow-horned clerid beetle is a medium-sized, brightly patterned predatory beetle in the checkered beetle family (Cleridae). It typically has a slender, slightly flattened body, long legs for running, and distinctive yellow or orange antennae (“horns”) that contrast with a darker, often red-and-black or brown-and-yellow patterned body. Like other clerids, it has a hairy or velvety texture and well-developed mandibles for catching prey.

Interesting fact:
Clerid beetles are natural pest controllers — many species hunt wood-boring beetle larvae (including termites and borer pests), making them quiet but important allies in forests, bushland, and even timber structures. Some can actually smell their prey inside wood and track them down with surprising precision.

Do they bite? - Absolutely and they can be hard to remove.

Since 2007, TBE has been working with Landcom to establish and implement a biodiversity offset at Mt Gilead, Rosemeadow NSW. Today we inspected the first stage of works which was clearing of African Olive (7 ha). This will be left to regenerate for 3-6 months to encourage native regrowth. In the mean time another 16 hectares of drilling of privets and chain sawing of African olive will be undertaken in the remnants. The crews spotted a Koala 4 months ago and Dusky Woodswallows. Propagation for planting has commenced for shrubs , mid storey and canopy species is in train.
