The 2026 Census is almost here, and one question matters more than many people realise, religion.

If you identify as Christian, even if you only attend church at Christmas or Easter, don’t automatically tick “No religion.”

The Census isn’t asking how often you go to church. It’s asking what your religion is. If Christianity is still part of your identity, beliefs or values, answer honestly.

The results influence how Australia understands itself. They are used by governments, researchers and community organisations to measure religious affiliation and help inform planning and policy. They also shape the national conversation about Australia’s cultural identity.

If millions of people who still identify as Christian tick “No religion” simply because they aren’t regular churchgoers, the data will paint a very different picture of Australia than the reality.

No one should claim to be something they aren’t. If you genuinely have no religion, tick “No religion.” But if you’re Christian, then say you’re Christian.

On Census night, answer truthfully. If you identify as Christian, make sure your Census reflects it.

Representation starts with honest answers.

Census night is Tuesday, 11 August, and for most people in Australia, taking part is not optional.

The Census is compulsory under the Census and Statistics Act 1905, one of Australia’s oldest federal laws still in force.

Everyone in Australia on Census night is generally required to be counted, including babies, tourists and temporary visa holders (with limited exceptions, such as certain foreign diplomats).

If you don’t complete your Census, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will first contact you with reminders. If you still don’t respond, you may be issued a formal written direction. Continuing to refuse can lead to prosecution and a maximum fine of $364 for each day you fail to comply.

Knowingly providing false or misleading information can result in a maximum penalty of $3,640.

The ABS expects more than 11 million households to take part. The 2021 Census counted 25.4 million people, and the 2026 Census will be Australia’s 19th national Census.

Supporters argue the Census plays a vital role in determining where funding is directed for schools, hospitals, roads and other essential services, while critics question whether participation should be compulsory and whether the amount of personal information collected is justified.

The ABS states it has undertaken independent privacy assessments and says personal Census information is protected under strict confidentiality laws.

One of the best just walked off the field.

Gary Stevenson from Gary’s Economics, has 1.64 million subscribers on YouTube but decided to hang up his boots.

A former City trader who made millions at Citibank, then spent years explaining why living standards keep sliding while the billionaire class hoovers up the lot. His crime? Asking for a 2% tax on wealth over £10 million.

And here’s why he’s done. His own words: “I’m quitting. I’m sick of being called an idiot by idiots, and I’m sick of being called a liar by liars.” One bloke, every single week, worn down by the loudest, best-funded voices calling him the liar.

Because that’s the game. The billionaires, the mining money can pay a thousand influencers to run the same line at you, until the honest voices burn out and the paid ones are all that’s left standing.

And what he’s fighting is what I’m fighting. You’re being lied to. Electricity is one of the biggest lies of the lot. The billionaire class has weaponised your power bill. The same voices that profit off burning coal and gas are the one’s telling you that the cheapest form of power generation will hurt you!!

Clean energy is the cheapest form of power generation in Australia, this isn’t an opinion, this is backed up by the data. Wholesale electricity prices fell 47%. Gas generation? Lowest it’s been in 23 years, shoved out of the market by batteries.

And here’s the one that gives up the whole game. Batteries are now setting the price, and they did it at $107 a megawatt hour. Gas was charging $452 for the exact same job a year ago. Quarter of the price. That’s the thing they’ll spend a fortune making sure you never hear.

But even on his way out, Gary left us the reason we bother. His words: “I cannot be the only educator on this.” That’s it. That’s the whole job. It can’t be one worn out voice against a hundred paid ones, it has to be a lot of us, all pulling the same way.

Please don’t let the good ones carry it alone. Share their stuff. Back them. Because when the last honest educator logs off, the only voices left are the ones being paid to lie to you.

A big thank you to the Department of Tourism and Parks for working with the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure to ensure the Welcome to the Territory sign was cleaned of graffiti. There is no excuse for vandalism like this. Anyone caught defacing public property should face the full consequences of their actions.
