SPRING IS COMING… AND SO ARE THE FLYING TERMITES

Here's something every Perth homeowner should know as the weather starts warming up.

Some termite colonies are about to take flight. Literally.

During favourable warm and humid conditions, mature termite colonies can release large numbers of winged reproductive termites, known as alates.

Their job is simple:

Leave their existing colony, find a mate, find a suitable location — and attempt to establish a brand-new termite colony.

You may suddenly find dozens, hundreds or even thousands of them around outdoor lights, windows, patios or sometimes inside the house.

And that's when homeowners understandably panic.

But here's the important part...

Finding flying termites doesn't automatically mean your home has termites.

They can travel from established colonies elsewhere in the surrounding area.

However, if large numbers suddenly appear inside your home, particularly if they seem to be emerging from a wall, skirting, timber or another part of the building, that's something we would want investigated.

Another clue is discarded wings.

After landing, termite alates shed their wings before attempting to pair up and establish a new colony. Small piles of identical-looking wings around windows, floors or other areas can therefore be worth paying attention to.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU FIND THEM?

Take some photos. Put in a 5 cent or other object to give size comparison, and get as close as you can to capture as much detail as possible.

Keep a few specimens if possible.

Look for where they appear to be coming from.

And if they're emerging from the building itself, arrange a professional termite inspection.

Most importantly, don't assume that because you've never seen termites around your home before, they aren't in your neighbourhood.

A termite flight is a very visible reminder that termite colonies are already living somewhere around us.

So, what can you actually do to reduce spiders around your home this spring?

The biggest tip is to stop looking at spiders as the only problem.

Spiders go where they have food, shelter and somewhere protected to build their webs and reproduce.

Reducing other insects, removing old webs and egg sacs, trimming vegetation away from the house and clearing clutter around outdoor areas can make a genuine difference.

And start early.

Once spring is well underway and spiders have established themselves around eaves, patios, sheds and gardens, they're much harder to stay on top of.

A little prevention now can mean a lot fewer cobwebs later.

You might not be seeing many spiders yet... but that doesn't necessarily mean they're not there.

Spiders love the areas around our homes that we rarely disturb — behind pot plants, under outdoor furniture, around eaves, inside sheds, meter boxes, garages and amongst garden debris.

And as the weather warms up, these protected areas can become perfect places for spiders to establish themselves.

Our tip? Take 10 minutes this weekend and walk around your home.

Move a few pot plants. Look underneath the outdoor furniture. Check around the eaves, windows and door frames. Have a look inside the shed and around those quiet corners nobody normally touches.

You're not just looking for spiders.

Look for webs and egg sacs too.

Finding and dealing with these areas early can make a big difference before spider activity really takes off later in spring.

Sometimes the best pest management starts before you actually have a pest problem.

SPRING PEST SERIES – SPIDERS: PART 1

Spring is almost here... but Perth's spiders don't necessarily wait for the calendar.

Those random warmer days we've already been experiencing can start getting insects moving — and more insects means more food for spiders.

But there's something else homeowners should be thinking about.

Spring is also an important breeding period for many spiders.

Female spiders can produce egg sacs containing dozens — and depending on the species, sometimes hundreds — of eggs.

And those egg sacs aren't usually sitting somewhere obvious.

They're tucked away under outdoor furniture, around eaves, behind pot plants, inside sheds, amongst foliage and in other quiet, protected areas around your home.

So while you might only notice the occasional spider now, what's happening out of sight is worth paying attention to.

“I’VE GOT A TERMITE BARRIER, SO I DON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT TERMITES.”

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST TERMITE INSPECTION?

Not your last pest spray.

Not the last time someone treated the spiders around your home.

An actual, thorough termite inspection.

There’s a very big difference.

One of the biggest misconceptions we come across is that homeowners believe because they haven't seen termites, everything must be okay.

Unfortunately, termites don't usually work like that.

They can travel underground, enter through tiny concealed areas and feed inside timber where there may be very little visible evidence from the outside.

By the time a homeowner actually notices something, the termites may have been there for quite some time.

That’s why a good termite inspection isn't simply about looking for termites.

We’re also looking for the things that tell us why termites might choose your home in the future.

Moisture around the building.

Leaking plumbing.

Poor drainage.

Timber touching the ground.

Garden beds built too high against external walls.

Old tree stumps and timber around the property.

Areas of the building that can't be properly accessed.

Previous termite activity or damage.

And importantly, what termite protection is currently in place — and whether it is still likely to be providing protection.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we find during an inspection isn't termites at all.

It's something the homeowner can change today that may significantly reduce their future risk.

That's the part of termite management that doesn't get talked about enough.

A termite inspection shouldn't just leave you with a piece of paper saying "No termites found."

You should walk away understanding your home better than you did before the inspection.

When was the last time your home was properly inspected for termites?
