Parrotfish sight words is our first app. Parrotfish sight words teaches sight words through games that emphasise different reading skills. The games make learning sight words fun and enjoyable for early readers. These games cover more than a hundred of the high frequency sightwords. Instant recognition of these high frequency sight words

improves confidence in reading and writing. The 6 unique games use multiple voices and fun animations to help maintain child involvement, and the reward system, following familiar game reward mechanics, is fun and motivating. Each level character, when tapped, shows the words being practised at that level. Tap each word to hear it. These can be used for checking progress, revision or pre-testing. Options allow progression through games and levels in logical order or all levels can be unlocked so younger children can play the easier games at each level. Music can be turned off and levels can be reset. Each of the 6 games encourage practise of multiple reading techniques in a non threatening manner. Children can apply these reading techniques to learning the more complex and irregular words. Fun and interesting characters give children a reason to continue playing. GAMES
1 - Peter Puffs: Matching a word to the same word, (visual discrimination, one to one correspondence, visual tracking)
2 - Super Shelly: Finding a pair of words (both auditory memory and visual memory)
3 - Crabby Clara: Building a word from its component parts, ie the letters (one to one correspondence, attendance to word shapes, letter recognition, understanding that words are made up of letters)
4 - Edgar's Eggs: Seeing and hearing a word, remembering it and then identifying words that are not the same (visual memory, word recognition)
5 - Wally's Words: Seeing a word, remembering it and identifying it on the next screen (visual memory)
6 - Stella Stars: Hearing a word and identifying a word from a selection (reading and applying what has been remembered from previous games)

Our new typing app has just been released in beta - it is pretty awesome and will be great for 7 to 70 year olds. We see some family challenges coming up.

This little guy is one of the vehicles in the typing app we are almost ready to release. Adults and kids will love this game where you have to get through the different areas typing letters to destroy obstacles. If you can type to a beat you get even more points.
Our typing has improved just testing this so we know it works.

Our Maths App for the first years of school is now available on IOS. It concentrates on number, starting with counting to 5 and then uses those numbers to teach addition and subtraction, counting on, decomposition, friends of 5. In fact all of the concepts needed for the higher order numbers are covered with just the numbers 0 to 5. We are really concentrating on developing concepts in small doses. The first levels are free, the rest of the levels are available with in app purchase.

Kids learn better when they can connect previous learning to the new, they know what skills and content they are going to learn, and they can monitor their own progress.
The content in our apps is arranged in levels or stages with each building on the skills learned previously. We give lots of practice with different games at each level, each emphasising different teaching and learning styles.
Kids (and parents) can monitor progress through our star system, and they can't progress until a level of mastery has been achieved.
Our system motivates, and sometimes frustrates, but it does work.

The ParrotFish Apps are different to most other apps that say they are educational. Our apps are engaging, entertaining and fun but their prime purpose is to teach. We present content in a systematic order, in small chunks and cover the same content in a variety of ways. We generally have 6 games for each level, each of which emphasises a different learning style because we believe that children learn the best when the same material is presented in multiple ways.

This has to be shared, I love Maths jokes. Just a reminder that our Maths App for the first years of school is still happening. From talking to a lot of young children I am aware that we really need to do a fractions App. I come across so many young kids who just "don't get it". Understanding fractions should begin early and then, like reading, it's easy to build on sound understanding.
