TPD — total and permanent disability cover — in plain English.

Here's the uncomfortable version: dying is not the worst financial outcome. Surviving, and never working again, usually is.

The income stops either way. But with a permanent disability the costs go up: modifications to the house, a car you can actually get into, help around the home, care that Medicare doesn't fully cover.

TPD pays a lump sum when illness or injury means you won't be returning to work. You can hold it inside super — which keeps it off the household budget — or pay for it personally.

One thing worth knowing: the definition of "unable to work" isn't identical inside super and outside it. Getting that wording right is most of the value of sitting down with someone.

If you've got cover through your super fund and you've never read what it actually says, bring it in. We'll read it with you. 08 9453 8888.

Life insurance, in plain English.

It's the simplest of the personal insurances. If you die, or you're diagnosed with a terminal illness, it pays a lump sum to the people you've nominated.

That money doesn't have to be spent on anything in particular. Most families use it to wipe the mortgage, clear other debts, and leave enough behind that the surviving partner isn't forced back to full-time work while also becoming a single parent overnight.

Two things people often don't realise:

1. You can pay the premiums from your super instead of your bank account, so it doesn't hit the weekly budget.
2. Who receives the money depends on your nomination and your will — it's worth checking that yours still says what you think it says.

The question we'd ask you: if it happened next month, would the payout clear the mortgage AND keep the household running? Those are two different numbers.

Give us a ring on 08 9453 8888 and we'll do the sum with you.

Nobody argues about insuring the car. It's a few thousand dollars sitting in the driveway and we wouldn't dream of driving it uninsured.

Now think about the thing that paid for the car. And the house. And the groceries, the school fees, the holiday.

If you earn $90,000 a year and you've got 25 working years ahead of you, that's more than two million dollars of income heading your way — assuming nothing goes wrong. That's the asset. That's the thing worth protecting.

Personal insurance is simply a way of making sure that money still turns up if your health doesn't cooperate.

Happy to talk it through with you — no obligation, no jargon. 08 9453 8888 or [email protected].

Here's a question most of us have never sat down and answered.

If your pay stopped tomorrow — you're sick, you're injured, you're just not going back to work for a while — how long would the mortgage keep getting paid?

Have a guess. Then check your leave balance. For most people the honest answer is a few weeks.

Personal insurance is the thing that keeps paying the bills when your health stops you earning — and most people either don't have it, or have no idea what theirs actually covers.

This is the stuff we wish everyone knew before they needed it.

One of the biggest misconceptions about financial planning is that we spend our days talking about investments.

The truth?

The first question we usually ask isn't, 'How much do you have invested?'

It's, 'What do you want your life to look like?'

Once we understand what matters most to you, everything else starts to fall into place.

That's because financial planning isn't about products - it's about people.

The investments, superannuation and tax strategies are important, but they're only valuable if they help you achieve your own goals.

The best financial plan isn't the one with the highest return. It's the one that gives you confidence you're heading in the right direction.

Last week I attended a professional development day with other financial advisers, and one idea has stayed with me.

Before deciding how to grow a business, it's worth asking why you're in business in the first place.

Once you know your 'why', many other decisions become clearer.

Do you extend your working hours to build something bigger, or protect time for family and the things that matter most? Do you chase every opportunity, or stay focused on the work you do best?

There isn't a right or wrong answer. The important thing is that your daily decisions align with your purpose.

The same principle applies to financial planning.

The best financial strategies don't start with investments or tax - they start with understanding what's important to you. What does financial success actually look like? Is it retiring early? Working less? Travelling more? Helping your children? Having the confidence that you'll be okay no matter what life throws at you?

At Purely FP, we believe good advice starts with understanding your 'why'. Once that's clear, building the right financial strategy becomes much easier.

Behind every recommendation we make is hours of research.

This week we caught up with our investment partners at VanEck to discuss the latest developments in global markets and their investment solutions.

The investment landscape is constantly evolving, and we believe it's important to keep challenging our thinking and staying up to date with new research.

Our goal isn't to recommend the newest investment - it's to recommend the right investment for each client's circumstances. Some clients are comfortable taking more risk in pursuit of higher long-term returns, while others value a smoother ride with less volatility. Neither approach is right or wrong - it depends on your goals, timeframe and comfort with risk.

That's why we spend so much time researching, asking questions and ensuring the advice we give is backed by evidence.
