PUBLIC NOTICE - CORELLAS AT KILMORE GOLF COURSE

A plea for help!:
Corellas are again attacking the greens and fairways at Kilmore Golf Course.
The Department of Land, Environment, Water and Planning (DELWP) have loaned the Club 4 Eagle Eye Units which KGC have agreed to use on a trial basis in an attempt to scare away the birds. We need help from local residents (members or concerned members of the public) to put them out and bring them in each day. Anyone wishing to help please contact the Club (5782 1123) or [email protected] . Please be aware that the Club is now run entirely by volunteers so the golf shop is not staffed every day, therefore response to your enquiries may take a day or so.

Non-lethal Control of Corellas at Kilmore Golf Course:
Local residents and concerned community members please be aware that Kilmore Golf Club with the advice of the Department of Land, Environment, Water and Planning (DELWP) are undertaking non-lethal control of invading Corellas using a firearm and salt pellets. This is being done on an ‘as needs basis’. At such times the course is closed to all, with volunteers patrolling the boundaries to ensure public safety. This is being done to deter the Corellas from landing on the greens and causing substantial damage from December through to April.

Public Notice - Corellas at Kilmore Golf Club

This notice is to advise the community that we heard you.

Every year there is a migration of Little Corellas and Long-billed Corellas to the Kilmore Golf Club. In the past, we have managed the Corellas by applying for an Authority to Control Wildlife permit to lethally control a small number of birds. This has been successful in deterring the birds and reducing the impact and destruction that the birds have on the golf course playing surface.

Earlier this year however, the arrival of the birds was not deterred and they arrived in massive numbers. As had been our practice for many years, we received the appropriate permit, but there was a significant outcry from the community when we began to lethally control a small number of birds and we ceased shortly after we began.

Despite that, throughout this year we have trialled a variety of non-lethal methods attempting to move the birds on but regardless of the many methods we tried, we’ve had limited success and there is still a large number of birds roosting in the trees at the club and the Kilmore Hospital.

The damaged fairways and greens have resulted in many golfers visiting other golf clubs in the region, which has meant a loss of income for the club and local businesses.

The large variety of flora and fauna together with the quiet country atmosphere that you experience when you play golf at Kilmore is part of the attraction for members and the many people who walk through and around the course every week. We do not want to change any of that as we believe it is essential to the club and the community.

Recently we applied for (and received) an Authority to Scare Permit and some of you may have heard the loud bangs (similar to the sound of a shot gun). This latest method is having some success.

We are working closely with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to develop a more sustainable and long term plan to control the migration of the birds using non-lethal methods and have no intention of using any lethal methods to control the birds in the foreseeable future.

The Kilmore Golf Club has set up a new email address [email protected] and page ‘Corellas at Kilmore Golf Club’, specifically to provide information and receive feedback about our Corella Management Plan and we’d appreciate any suggestions you have.
