Choosing the right person to care for your dog is crucial—especially someone who can handle a medical emergency if it arises.
Last night, Heidi, one of my Cavoodles, ruptured her a**l glands. With the vets closed and me unable to drive due to having had day surgery under anaesthetic, I had to rely on my experience and practical instincts. After cleaning up a very messy situation, I gathered supplies from my medicine cabinet—gauze bandages tape and an antibiotic cream—then improvised by cutting up a pair of (my) knickers to secure the dressing. I then used her thunder jacket backwards to keep everything in place, finishing with an Elizabethan collar to stop her from disturbing the area.
The situation really reinforced how important it is to choose a dog carer who knows how to respond calmly and effectively in an emergency—someone with hands-on experience and the confidence to manage unexpected situations.
