UNSW iGEM

UNSW iGEM We are the UNSW iGEM team, part of an international synthetic biology competition. Come see what we?

iGEM, international Genetically Modified Machine, is a world famous competition in which university students use synthetic biology to make Earth a better, healthier, cleaner and more awesome place. Student-led teams spend the year designing, assembling and testing their own biological machines based on the principles of synthetic biology - rational design, modularisation, standardisation and open-

source collaboration. This year, six overly ambitious, science-loving undergrads from The University of New South Wales have joined forces to enter this competition. We will receive a kit of DNA parts, and from there who knows where we will go! Stay tuned for updates on our real life science fiction plans. Just a snapshot of some of our lovely works we have at the virtual exhibition. Here we have featured works by Petra Meikle de Vlas, Betty Sykes, James Unsworth and a collaboration piece from Erub Arts.

These beautiful pieces of art convey how stunning the reefs are to the artists. But not only that, they tell us a story about the reef's importance to their way of life and how tragic the loss would be. Their full written statements are undeniably inspiring and can be found in our exhibition; they definitely shouldn't be missed.

To check out our virtual exhibition, we have a linked tree in our bio, where there's a $150 prize giveaway waiting for you!

This virtual exhibition aims to depict the importance of our coral reef ecosystems to the local and Indigenous People of Australia. We aim to exhibit on an international scale, more than the aesthetics of the reefs, but to tell a story of the emotional and cultural connection that we have. We wish to invoke in others, the sense of value and importance we hold towards the reefs, and in turn, gain traction in the protection of these reefs.

We have involved brilliant artists and photographers from Bana Yirriji Art Centre, Erub Arts, James Unsworth, Kris Casey, Kurun Warun, Petra Meikle de Vlas, Pompuraaw Art Centre and Wayne Quilliam.

To understand the impacts of the reef and how our virtual exhibition has influenced your understanding, we have included a feedback form. By completing this form, we will include you in our giveaway that supports local ocean charities and businesses supporting a positive environmental footprint.

If the answer is YES, this survey regarding coral bleaching is the one for you! https://forms.office.com/r/UK1SzRg6q5

The UNSW iGEM team is currently designing a real-world, synthetic biology solution to address the coral bleaching issue at the Great Barrier Reef, and we would love to hear your thoughts and opinions regarding this matter. We truly believe that your perspective will help shape the direction of our project and save the heart of our oceans 🌊

The survey will only take you 5-10 minutes, so what are you waiting for!

The 2021 UNSW iGEM team is RECRUITING! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

If you are interested in synthetic biology πŸ”¬, mathematics, coding, engineering or design - this is the competition for you! We are looking to build a highly interdisciplinary team of students to tackle every part of creating a synthetic biology solution that is good and responsible for the world. For the first time, the iGEM Jamboree will be held in Paris, France where ~300 teams head to present results at the end of the year.

UNSW has had great success at this competition in the past, and the team will be carefully selected as places will be limited in the 2021 team. If you are interested, check out last year's team website (https://2020.igem.org/Team:UNSW_Australia). The 2021 team will be building on the work of the PROTECC Coral as a Phase 2 project.
