This lovely lady is resting up in the shed, looking as good as ever. A quiet moment before the winter work begins and the next season sneaks up on us. There's something deeply meditative about cruising up and down the rows in this orange beast — one of my all-time favourite jobs. 🚜🍇

Last of the harvest jobs… nets rolled in, and with them, the season finally done.

What a year 2026 was.

There’s real relief in that — the quiet satisfaction of having made it through. The fruit looks great, a smaller crop than last year, but the quality is there. The vines had their own ideas, as they always do.

So much goes into a season that never makes it into the glass. Endless tractor work, careful canopy management, the kind of slow and unglamorous labour that holds everything together. Nights spent watching the weather app, willing the forecast to shift — tracking rain, hail, frost, hoping the patterns move differently to what’s predicted. Early starts, late finishes, and the whole cycle turning without pause.

But this is the work, and it’s worth it.

For now, a moment to stop. To take stock, catch a breath, and find some equilibrium before pruning comes around again.

Tuesday marked the end of our Straws Lane harvest, and what a vintage it’s been.

The morning started grey and drizzly, but cleared into a beautiful sunny day — a fitting send-off for the last of our fruit. We brought in 2.6 tonnes of Pinot Noir for table wine, topped up our Sparkling base to 1.7 tonnes, and rescued a forgotten bucket of Gewürztraminer that somehow slipped through last week (which I’ve turned into jam!).

It was a tough vintage — plenty of challenges and curveballs along the way — so there’s real relief in knowing the grapes are safely in the winery. There’s still work to be done before everything is tucked away for winter, but I can finally stop obsessively checking the weather app every hour. 😅

Small mercies. 🍷🌿

It's that time of year again....

First grapes were picked on 13 March this year, which was considerably later than normal. So far I've picked Marsanne, my Lakeside Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon for Rosé and the balance of my Heathcote Shiraz. Yields are small, but quality if high, which is a relief - it's been such a challenging year!

Now I'm just waiting for my Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer to ripen at my Straws Lane vineyard in the Macedon Ranges. Testing today, with the possibility of picking for Sparkling later this week.. exciting times ahead.

Nets on at Straws Lane yesterday, to keep those birds away (hopefully!). A small sigh of relief as we head into this final stage of the 2026 vintage.

We’ve been lucky to avoid the frosts, fires and hail that have swept through this season and affected many of our friends and their harvests. The end is not here yet though, and we can only hope that Mother Nature is kind for this final leg of the year long marathon. Fingers crossed, hey? 🤞🏻🤞🏻
