Gelganyem Welcomes Rio Tinto Executive Mark Davies
On 30 June 2026, Gelganyem Board Directors and Executive staff welcomed Mark Davies, Rio Tinto's Chief Safety & Technical Officer, to the former Argyle Diamond Mine for an on-country visit to view the progress of mine closure and rehabilitation works. In his role, Mark has responsibility for Rio Tinto's safety, technical and social performance standards, as well as oversight of closure legacy sites across the company's global operations.
The visit provided an opportunity to see firsthand the scale of the work being undertaken to close Argyle safely and responsibly, while also highlighting the significance of the site to Traditional Owners and the importance of ensuring a positive legacy for future generations.
The following day, Mark met with the Gelganyem Board and Executive team at the Gelganyem office in Kununurra to continue discussions. The meeting focused on the work being carried out to safely close the mine, the challenges faced by Traditional Owners, and the collective effort required to pave the way for positive long-term outcomes for Country, community and future generations.
With more than 30 years of experience at Rio Tinto in operational, technical and leadership roles, Mark's visit was an important opportunity for Traditional Owners to engage directly with a senior Rio Tinto executive responsible for areas central to Argyle's closure and rehabilitation.
These conversations are critical to ensuring Traditional Owner voices are heard and respected as mine closure activities continue. Gelganyem values the opportunity to engage directly with Rio Tinto leadership and to discuss the priorities, aspirations and concerns of our people.
We thank Mark for taking the time to visit Country, listen to our perspectives, and engage in constructive discussions about the future of Argyle and the communities connected to it.
