Following on from yesterday's reel, this is a classic example of what I and many other drum restorers deal with.

An absolutely classic and rare Leedy & Ludwig Elkhart, Indiana 1950 - 1955, 5 year production period drum kit. These kits mean a lot to me as soon as they enter the workshop. I obsess over every detail, over and over and over again.

As was standard practice in the 50's the re-rings were glued using hot hide glue. When this glue sits in the Australian climate for a few decades it just gives out and pop goes the re-ring. I always reglue these using 2 part epoxy for it's strength.

When this process is done you very carefully re-seat and re-cut the bearing edges to the original profile, in this case a classic baseball bat profile. You take off the absolute minimum that you have to.

This is an incredible kit. The maple was some of the hardest maple I've ever worked with and they sounded absolutely superb 👌
