🍇 A visit to St Ignatius in Rome

While in Rome, we couldn’t resist visiting the magnificent Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola — a place that feels especially meaningful to us at St Ignatius Vineyard.

Built in the 17th century in honour of St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, the church has a fascinating connection to Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi, the nephew of Pope Gregory XV. A passionate patron of the arts and a powerful figure in Rome, Ludovisi financed the construction of the church, with the foundation stone laid in 1626. He sadly died in 1632, before seeing his vision completed, but left a substantial sum in his will to ensure the work continued.

And then there is the ceiling… ✨

Look up and you seem to be gazing into an immense, soaring architectural space, filled with figures, light and movement. Yet much of what you see is an extraordinary illusion created by Jesuit artist Andrea Pozzo through the masterful use of perspective.

Even the magnificent-looking dome isn’t actually a dome at all! It is painted in perspective on a flat canvas about 13 metres across, creating a remarkable trompe-l’œil effect. Stand in just the right spot and your eyes are convinced that the painted architecture rises high above you.

It’s one of those places where art, faith, history and a little bit of magic come together.

Standing beneath that extraordinary ceiling, we couldn’t help but reflect on the name St Ignatius and the journey that connects a beautiful church in the heart of Rome with our own vineyard here in Australia. 🍷

Some names carry a story across centuries — and we’re proud to be part of that story.

Salute from Rome! 🇮🇹🍷

🌄 Hidden among the dry hills of Central Otago stands Mitchell’s Cottage — a reminder of the hard lives lived during New Zealand’s gold rush era.

🍁 Built from local schist stone in the late 1800s at Bald Hill Flat, the cottage sheltered the Mitchell family through harsh winters, scorching summers, and the uncertainty of life on the goldfields.

💰 At a time when thousands arrived in Otago chasing fortune, families like the Mitchells created homes from the land itself, stacking stone by hand and building communities in places that today seem remote and silent.

⏳️ The settlement once echoed with the sounds of miners, horses, sluicing water, and hopeful prospectors. Today, the weathered cottage remains as one of the few surviving links to that chapter of Central Otago history.

🤔 Standing there now, surrounded by open tussock country and old mining scars, it’s easy to imagine the resilience required to raise a family in such an unforgiving landscape.

Mitchell’s Cottage is more than an old stone building — it is a story of endurance, migration, family, and the determination of early settlers who helped shape the Otago region.
