Ever seen a post with a friend tagged, for a video and when you tap the video it asks you to sign into Facebook?

DON’T

See the link is NOT Facebook at all (circled in red)

This is SCAM designed to steal passwords for accounts. They then create profiles for your friend’s accounts if visible and create so many echos throughout Facebook. All designed to steal accounts and individual IDs.

ID Theft is growing exponentially. We are the ones in control. DO NOT sign in to any page purporting to be Facebook. THINK about what you are doing.

My personal account has either been cloned and reported by my friends or the hackers have reported my personal account for pretending to be their fake account. All because a friend signed in to one of these links possibly (NOT THIS FRIEND tagged).

If you give up your personal details there is no going back. It allows the hacker to farm all your details and any of your friend’s details. It’s frustrating for ALL.

Luckily I hide my friend list visible to “only me” so whilst they can see who the hacked account is friends with (me) they cannot see who my friends are. Why is this lucky? Because when they go to add my friends to the fake account they cannot see who they are!!!!

DONT DO IT!!

📣 Beware of misleading information about bonus Centrelink payments!

Unofficial websites and social media accounts are sharing fake information about bonus Centrelink payments. They encourage you to click on their website to read about a new ‘one off payment’, ‘cash relief payment’ or ‘bonus payment’.

They’re targeting our customers by falsely saying there’s an extra payment coming to help ease the cost of living pressures. There is no bonus payment.

If you visit one of these websites or click on their links on social media, you’re at risk of being scammed.

Don’t trust unofficial websites or social media accounts for advice about Centrelink payments.

You can find a list of our verified social media accounts on our official website here: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/connect-with-us-social-media?context=64107

Recently a customer was fleeced of $11,000...... Gone for good!

If you receive a call from ANYONE or ANY company DO NOT allow them access to your computer for ANY reason. DO NOT follow their directions to install ANY software.

Contact a local I.T. store or person if you are worried about what they discuss on the phone.

Are you worried about your data/files?

Is the recent outbreak of "Wannacry" worrying you?

Backup drives start at $70. If used regularly and wisely, you can minimise your exposure.

Don't leave the backup drive plugged in especially while you read your emails or at times you are likely to be exposed to these threats.

Buy a drive that has its own backup software if you are unsure of how to do backups and make sure you install the software and set it up.

Don't know how? I can set up any modern computer to do backups.

Windows 7 and Windows 10 both have backup solutions built in. Just buy the drive and search for 'backup' (Windows 7, start menu. Windows 10, Cortana). Plug the drive in and wait for the computer to identify it and install it. Then run the backup.

Do a backup as regularly as you are willing to sacrifice files and data. And remember to unplug the drive before you set about doing anything else. Make sure you safely remove it by selecting the removal icon at bottom-right near the clock, before you unplug the drive.

If this is all too much for you let me know and I can book you in to sort this out.

$70 of hardware can save you untold amounts of anguish losing years of photos and files.

One more bit of advice.
If you don't know the person sending an email - don't open it
If you aren't expecting an attachment from someone - don't open it
If you your computer is suggesting a windows update - apply it!
Do NOT follow prompts in emails to do any actions on your computer. Even if it is a link to a video or file. Do not click the link.

Seems to be a bit of this going around lately...
My neighbour reported this only last week..
He was browsing a site and a whole page popped up saying he needed to contact Microsoft Support on the following number....

He couldn't close the page. Luckily he heeded my warning and switched the computer off (Shutdown). This cleared it up quick smart.

Unluckily I have had support calls from a few....
One was trying to download a TV Show... Ignored the warnings and furthermore, called the number, allowed the person on the other end remote access, etc..

As a general warning... DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE ACCESS to your computer.. While you talk to them on the phone... Regardless of if you called them, or they called you and "Identified themselves"..

If you have not met the person before, don't let them have access.

If you think what is on the screen is legitimate, shutdown the computer and take it to a reputable repair place or call me if you are in the Launceston area...

Malware? PUPs? Think I am talking gibberish?
Chances are you have a form of Malware or PUP on your computer...

PUP=Potentially unwanted program
This is software that comes "bundled" with that thing you just had to have on your computer... They can range from Toolbars that slow your browser to a crawl, right through to official programs that you really don't need, like Ask and McAfee Security Scanner..

Malware=Software you have selected to install either knowingly or duped into it by glossy advertising within webpages.

I gain a lot of income from removing the bad cases, but a lot of the time you can simply download "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" and it will fix up a lot of the problem.

I will get shot down by many for recommending and reducing income of us IT professionals, but there is a technique... And that is where we come into it....

You MUST close all browsers prior to running it. You MUST let it update on first install and then you MUST let it run a full scan and at the end you MUST wait for it to cleanup the damage once you press "remove selected".
This process can take anywhere from 30 minutes on a modern computer with minimal infections and an SSD fitted, through to 3 hours on the worst one I have done.

You ask....
Why did my antivirus not stop this from happening?
A virus doesn't need consent to install itself. Antivirus software prevents programs from installing without your consent/knowledge.

Malware asks for consent. You have to allow it to install. It does not self replicate to other computers.

All too much? What's the quick answer?
If you need me to remove Malware that is fine. I am more than happy to do so and if you want it done in house, be aware that it can take some time. I am happy to take the computer and return it when done, or you can bring it to me.

At my regular workplace I am receiving an increasing number of emails supposedly from financial institutions. The latest from Bendigo Bank suggests it is sending a report update and has a very un-assuming and correct signature with a zip file attached. These zip files contain a screen saver file which for those unaware, a screen saver is simply another form for a program. When you click it, it runs...

In this case these are viruses. Do not accept emails with attachments zipped, or otherwise and check the last part of the filename. Some have been sending with multiple filetypes. The filename will look like

SummaryReport.pdf.exe

The .pdf means nothing here... The last part is the type of file it is... .exe
These are bad also....

Luckily I have a mail server that filters such files and the zip files also...

BEWARE!!!
If you have unintentionally activated what I have described get in touch. I can help....
